No one ever claimed parenting would be a walk in the park. In fact, countless people—from family and friends to random acquaintances—have reminded me that being a mom is the “hardest job you’ll ever love.” While I anticipated various challenges along the way, I also knew that the overwhelming joy and love from my children would make it all worthwhile. Yet, the reality of hitting a parenting roadblock can be incredibly tough.

As my eldest wraps up kindergarten at six years old, I realize that some of the hurdles we’ve faced so far will likely pale in comparison to what lies ahead during the teenage years. However, here are the eight most challenging moments I’ve encountered in my parenting journey thus far:

  1. Discovering your child has told a blatant lie. You know the kind—the intentional, “I don’t want to get in trouble” type of deceit.
  2. Witnessing your child feel left out, whether from friends excluding them from activities or events. It’s a familiar sting that we all experience at some point.
  3. The first time you hear, “I hate you!” from your child. Even though a six-year-old likely doesn’t mean it, it still stings.
  4. Facing the inevitable questions about sex. When your child catches you off guard with questions like, “Mommy, how did the baby get in your tummy?” or “Where did people come from?”
  5. Dealing with the heartbreak when your once-cuddly little one pushes away your hugs and kisses.
  6. The months when my toddler seemed to prefer his dad over me. I knew it was only a phase, but it certainly felt rough at the time.
  7. Experiencing that first full-blown public tantrum, complete with red cheeks and feet stomping.
  8. Grappling with how to explain tragedies like the Newtown school shooting to my six-year-old.

Mamas, do any of these resonate with you?
