On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took the oath of office as the 46th President and Vice President of the United States. This monumental occasion was unforgettable for numerous reasons, particularly the moment Michelle Obama graced the Capitol steps in an ensemble that radiated pure American elegance. Dressed in a stunning head-to-toe purple outfit accentuated by a statement gold belt, she became a source of inspiration for fashion lovers, including a spirited 4-year-old from South Carolina.
Following the Obamas’ memorable Inauguration Day appearance, little Emma Thompson and her friend Carter Brown dressed up as miniature versions of Michelle and Barack Obama. They captured the essence of the looks so perfectly that Michelle herself shared their adorable photos online.
Emma’s aunt, Lily Thompson, recounted to NBC News that the moment Michelle stepped onto the Inauguration stage left their family in awe. They all agreed that Emma would look absolutely precious if they could recreate Michelle’s winter ensemble in a child-friendly version. With the help of Emma’s grandmother, who pieced together the mini-Michelle outfit, they invited little Carter to embody Barack, and they posed for photos outside the local library in Florence County, South Carolina, as a stand-in for the Capitol.
When Michelle shared the pictures on Instagram, exclaiming “you nailed it,” Emma’s family was ecstatic. “We were in total disbelief when Michelle recognized our photos,” Lily told Scary Mommy. “We often joked about what it would be like if she actually saw this, and to have her not only notice but also mention Emma and Carter’s names was beyond our wildest dreams.”
Lily continued, “We are so thankful she took the time to compliment our recreation of her iconic look. Everyone, especially Emma and the rest of our family, was thrilled!”
The photos are absolutely charming, and Emma’s foray into political fashion doesn’t stop with the Obamas. The little girl also showcased her version of the all-white pantsuit worn by Kamala Harris during her and Biden’s victory event last November.
It’s heartwarming to witness children taking an interest in politics, a possibility made real by trailblazers like Michelle and Kamala, who show young girls like Emma that they too can aspire to be involved in politics and fashion.
We can’t wait to see what delightful outfit Emma will don next!
