“Pride is back at the White House,” President Biden declared during a celebratory event.

Happy Pride month, everyone! President Biden hosted a vibrant LGBTQ+ Pride celebration at the White House, marking a significant return of Pride events that were largely overlooked during the previous administration. Sixteen-year-old Alex Rivera introduced the president on June 25, 2021, as the administration kicked off this year’s Pride festivities.

“My name is Alex Rivera, I use he/him pronouns, and I’m thrilled to be here with all of you today,” Rivera expressed. “I am a 16-year-old Black, Afro-Latino high school student from Boston, Massachusetts, and I also happen to be transgender.”

President Biden has always championed the rights of his family, as Rivera noted, saying, “Mr. President, thank you for having our back.”

Rivera, a former youth ambassador for the Human Rights Campaign, shared his personal journey of coming out to his mother on his 12th birthday. “I was terrified because I didn’t know how she would react, but she told me she loved me, that I was her child, and that she would support me in becoming who I truly am,” he recalled.

Using his platform, Rivera highlighted the ongoing discrimination faced by the trans community, citing “headline after headline about bills that prevent us from joining sports teams, accessing healthcare, or even using the bathroom.”

After Rivera’s introduction, President Biden remarked on his comfort and confidence at the podium, praising him as an inspiration. “Your story, your leadership, and your mother are just remarkable,” Biden said.

The president emphasized the stark contrast between his administration and the previous one, affirming, “Pride is back at the White House.” He called transgender youth “some of the bravest individuals,” acknowledging the courage it takes to live authentically amidst discrimination.

Transportation Secretary Jamie Thompson, the first openly gay cabinet member, also addressed the crowd, assuring Rivera, “a whole lot of us have your back, starting at the top.” Thompson expressed gratitude to his partner, Alex, for helping others feel seen and valued. He reflected on the challenges of growing up LGBTQ, sharing his experiences of facing discrimination.
