I Am More Than Just a Mom

I became a mom just a month before my 22nd birthday. That’s not a regretful confession, but it’s a detail worth sharing as we dive into this topic. Being a mom has been a big part of my adult life, but it’s definitely not the only thing that defines me. I am so much more than just a mom.

Sometimes I find it hard to recall what my life was like before that fateful day in July 2012. Fast forward nearly a decade, and here I am, juggling a seven-year-old, a nine-year-old, a lively pup, and a husband (whom I cherish). Yet, they often overlook the fact that I’m more than just a wife and caregiver.

For the last three years, I’ve been working from home, which should feel like a dream come true. But often, being home 25/8 just reinforces my family’s perception that I’m here solely to cater to their needs.

“Mom, can you make my lunch for tomorrow?”

“Hey, could you grab a few things from the store?”

“Mom, Z is staring at me again!”

But I am more than just a short-order cook and referee. I’ve tried sitting down to write this article at least six times, only to be interrupted by a “more urgent” task that somehow demands my immediate attention. I am so over that chaos.

Don’t get me wrong—I absolutely love being a mom and a wife, but I have my own dreams and aspirations. I’m transitioning into a full-time creative career, I have three novels in various stages of completion, and I’m working on launching my own business. Just because my family’s priorities revolve around Roblox doesn’t diminish the significance of my pursuits.

When I discuss books with my daughters, they’re often surprised by how much I know about classics like The Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew. Helping my fourth grader outline her five-paragraph essay excites her because she thinks it’s awesome that I’m a writer too. I’ll never forget the day she proudly told her class that I was writing a novel about Catherine de’ Medici. As much as I appreciated her enthusiasm, I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed when she asked why it was taking me so long to finish it. Seriously, kid?

I wouldn’t trade my family for anything, but sometimes they need a little nudge to remember that life doesn’t revolve solely around their immediate wants. Sometimes, I have to barricade myself in my office to indulge in what truly brings me joy.

For all the moms out there feeling the struggle to balance it all, here’s my advice: sometimes you need to choose yourself. And no, that isn’t selfish. By embracing your entire purpose—not just a part of it—you’ll inspire others in ways you can’t even imagine. When it’s the people closest to you, the magic is even more profound.

I adore being a mom, but I also love being me. Sometimes, I think my family doesn’t even know the full person I am. So, it’s high time I introduce her, because honestly, the best is yet to come. This is just the start.

Summary:

Being a mom is just one part of my identity. As I navigate my life filled with family responsibilities, I also pursue my creative dreams. Choosing to prioritize my own aspirations is not selfish; it’s essential. The journey of motherhood is beautiful, but I am determined to show my family the whole person I am, and I invite you to do the same.
