Jazz artist Lila Hart from North Carolina is celebrating her sixth Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album. Her son, Jake Hart, has just achieved his first Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Album. While the projects are distinct, both albums primarily explore the profound grief stemming from the loss of their beloved family member, who passed away in 2019. The mother-son pair view their nominations as a “wonderful coincidence.”
A Historic Moment
For the first time in Grammy history, a parent and child are nominated for different awards in the same year. “You can’t make this stuff up,” Lila shared with Alex Davis for TODAY. “Music has always been a part of our home. But this moment holds a unique significance. We’re both pursuing our paths, crafting music around family, and the fact that both projects received nominations in different categories this year is simply remarkable.”
Music as a Connection
Lila reminisced about how music was her way of connecting with her “nurturing energy,” and her late partner would often join her in performing with their three children. “You know, there’s the bath time routine — getting in the tub and all lathered up… then a story, and finally a song. With three kids, didn’t each one of them want their unique story? It was like a nightly performance,” she explained. Lila’s album, Echoes of Time, became her refuge during her grieving process. “You can’t find freedom without grieving. Pretending that your heart isn’t aching doesn’t bring liberation, but what to do with all those feelings? You have to channel it into something,” she expressed.
Jake echoed her sentiments, stating, “Creativity became our path to healing,” adding that grief is simply “an extension of love.” His album, Journey to Tomorrow, includes archival audio recordings featuring his father, alongside contributions from other family members. “I want children of color to see themselves as kids and to celebrate their youth,” he emphasized. “They deserve to embrace their joy, silliness, and uniqueness, seeing themselves as individuals who can flourish,” he added. The two plan to attend the awards ceremony together, along with Jake’s partner.
