In a recent interview with Insider, tennis superstar and business mogul Taylor Johnson shared her struggles with juggling motherhood and a demanding career, resonating with parents everywhere. After effortlessly completing a photoshoot in multiple outfits, the champion athlete switched to comfortable sweats and got real: being a mom is incredibly challenging, even with ample resources. “I’m not great at self-care. I was just telling my assistant that I desperately need a pedicure—it’s been two years since I last had one. Maybe I could squeeze it in while I’m on a call,” Johnson confided.
The best-selling author and mother to her 4-year-old daughter, Mia, acknowledged the difficulties of maintaining a busy schedule while parenting, admitting, “Mom guilt is so real. I always feel guilty when I take time for myself.” A sentiment echoed by mothers everywhere, including those with a personal assistant.
“I often question whether I’m a good mom, and I’m unsure if my parenting style is effective. But I’m very present with my daughter, much like our parents were with us. I’ve established solid boundaries, but once work wraps up, it’s straight to my daughter,” she added.
Yet, Johnson wasn’t shy about voicing the realization that many first-time moms come to: “What about Taylor?”
The 40-year-old has dominated the tennis world for over twenty years, building a reputation as a determined and empowered figure who inspires many. Her candidness about this new chapter in her life only adds to her appeal.
Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Johnson recently launched her own investment firm, Taylor Ventures, aimed at uplifting entrepreneurs of color, who often receive less than 1% of venture capital funding. “Whether it’s venture capitalists saying I shouldn’t pursue this or critics doubting my tennis skills, there’s a part of me that thrives on proving people wrong,” she shared.
Now that this Grand Slam champion plays tennis for the love of the game rather than accolades, she can focus on other aspects of her life. While she may let self-care slip, one thing is clear: she won’t shy away from challenges. After all, who better to guide her child than a brave and thoughtful role model like her?
