When designer Lila Thompson and her partner, Max, moved to their charming Victorian home in San Francisco, they knew they had to infuse the space with both character and comfort. With its narrow hallways and cozy yet compact rooms, this 140-year-old townhouse was a canvas waiting for a fresh touch. Shortly after welcoming their first child, they turned their focus to creating a sanctuary for their daughter, Ava. We caught up with Lila to discover how she crafted a whimsical and serene nursery that reflects their family’s spirit.
What was your vision for Ava’s nursery?
“I aimed for a soothing color scheme, typically sticking to three hues. I wanted a space where both Ava and I could feel relaxed, without being overwhelmed. I fell in love with a soft seafoam-green shade used in our living area, so I decided to incorporate it into the nursery, alongside gray and white. I also wanted to keep it gender-neutral, even though I was excited to have a girl and love the color pink—this way, the room felt inviting without being overly defined.”
How did designing Ava’s nursery compare to your work with clients?
“My approach for Ava’s space mirrored my professional methods. I began by creating a mood board and layout when I was about five months pregnant. I ordered everything by September and had the nursery all set up just three weeks before her arrival at the end of October.”
Can you tell us about the furniture you chose?
“The CB2 bookcases have been with us since our time in New York City; they’re versatile and fit seamlessly into any environment. Plus, they provide a convenient spot for diapers! The first major piece I purchased for the nursery was the lovely leaf-patterned dresser and changing table from Restoration Hardware, which I wanted as the focal point when entering the room. I also sought a chair that wasn’t a rocking chair since the space is quite compact—just 12 feet by 9 feet.”
Those colorful paintings really stand out! Where did they come from?
“I discovered those pieces at my hair salon, which hosts a rotating art exhibit each month. I was immediately drawn to the work of artist Mia Lin, as the colors and shapes fit perfectly with the room’s vibe.”
Are any items hand-me-downs or repurposed?
“Absolutely! Aside from the bookcases, Ava’s rocking horse was actually mine from childhood—my dad flew all the way from Montreal to gift it to her. Such a lovely touch!”
That wallpaper is stunning! What made you choose an accent wall?
“I decided to put the wallpaper on the back wall and in the nook with the rocking horse and canopy tent. This choice helps create an airy, calm atmosphere while giving the room a polished look without feeling too fussy.”
