“You’re so basic.” Some may consider this an insult, but for me, it’s a badge of honor. If you call me basic, I take it as a compliment because you’re recognizing my true self. I’ve taken those quizzes about how basic I am and I always score high. Being basic is as significant to me as my identity as a person of color or my queerness. And yes, I embrace my identity fully. Basic is a universal experience that transcends race and culture, and that’s part of its charm.
However, there’s a wave of negativity directed toward those of us who embrace our basicness. You’ll find countless individuals trashing pumpkin spice lattes or ridiculing chain restaurants like it’s a full-time job. In recent years, as the term “basic” has gone mainstream, the disdain for anything resembling basic has increased.
Why can’t we simply enjoy what we enjoy? Isn’t that the beauty of humanity — our freedom to like what we like?
There are plenty of things I don’t like or understand. For instance, I’ve never really gotten into geek culture. But just because I’m not a fan of certain franchises doesn’t mean I’ll spend my time criticizing them online. (Please don’t come for me about not liking superhero movies; I just haven’t connected with them.) Can we not just let others enjoy their passions without judgment? I’m unapologetically basic and I will defend this list of my favorite things with fervor.
1. Autumn
I adore summer, but there’s something magical about an early fall day. The fresh air, the first night you need a blanket, and those gorgeous changing leaves really take me back to the East Coast. Hand me an infinity scarf, please!
2. Pumpkin Spice Everything
While the pumpkin spice latte reigns supreme, if it has “pumpkin spice” on the label, you can bet I’m trying it.
3. Scented Candles
With countless scents available, I gravitate towards soft florals, fresh laundry, spicy notes, and pine. I want my space to always smell like a breath of fresh air.
4. Uggs
They might not win any beauty contests, but these shoes are incredibly comfy and keep my feet warm. With a variety of styles and colors, it’s easy to find the perfect pair for any occasion. Just avoid them in wet weather.
5. Leggings
Black leggings paired with a cute top are a wardrobe essential. They’re super comfy and can be dressed up or down for any setting. Basic folks like me practically live in our leggings.
6. Brunch
Brunch is the ultimate meal for us basic aficionados, especially if there’s avocado toast and endless mimosas. And let’s be real, if you didn’t post it on social media, did it even happen? Obviously not!
7. Frozen Yogurt
I know some call it frozen yogurt, but to me it’s pure bliss in a cup. I prefer tart flavors and love piling on fruit and cereal toppings (a tip: Cap’n Crunch reduces the pain of cuts to your mouth).
8. Common Phrases
If phrases like “I can’t even,” “totes,” or using “literally” in a figurative sense are in your vocabulary, welcome to the basic club!
9. Taylor Swift
Taylor is practically our queen. Her albums, especially “Reputation,” are on constant repeat, and you can’t convince me that “22” isn’t a total jam.
10. Chipotle
Sure, it may not be traditional Mexican cuisine, but it’s absolutely delicious. Pass the chips and guacamole, and yes, I’m aware it costs extra.
This is just a glimpse of what makes me proudly basic. Loving these things doesn’t equate to being dull or uninteresting. We all have our passions, so let’s allow each other to enjoy them, shall we? Stop sucking the joy out of everything.

Summary
In summary, embracing my basic interests is a source of joy, and there’s nothing wrong with that. From my love for autumn to my fondness for pumpkin spice, these aspects of my life bring me happiness. So let’s celebrate our differences and allow everyone to find joy in their unique preferences.
