If there’s one thing that encapsulates the essence of parenting, it’s this: while it can be utterly draining, many parents wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Recent research from the Pew Research Center reveals that moms and dads recognize the challenges of raising children but ultimately find their lives richer and more meaningful because of it. Interestingly, parents often prefer spending time at home with their kids over being at work. Can we get a collective “no kidding” on that one?
While it may seem obvious that stepping away from the office brings happiness, it’s nice to have some statistical backing for it. The researchers analyzed diaries from 4,822 parents aged 18 to 64, revealing that 12% found childcare to be “very tiring,” compared to 7% for household chores and just 5% for paid work. Even though parenting can be exhausting, a significant 35% of parents reported feeling happier when caring for their children, while only 19% felt the same about their jobs. Remarkably, this same group of parents also noted feeling less stressed while engaging in parenting activities.
So, what’s the takeaway from this research? Wendy Wang, the author of the Pew report, explains that while we understand how parents balance work and family, we have lacked insight into how they feel during these activities. This data sheds light on their emotional experiences. Interestingly, moms report feeling more fatigued than dads, with 15% stating childcare left them “very tired,” compared to only 5% of dads. This is compounded by the fact that moms also reported greater fatigue at work (7% vs. 4%) and while handling housework.
According to the Pew analysis, moms spend more time on childcare tasks than dads, which includes diaper changes and feeding. It’s clear that the majority of moms—62%—find their childcare experiences to be “very meaningful,” whereas only 36% deem their paid employment the same. Given a choice, most would prefer to be at home with their little ones. It raises the question: why isn’t this role properly recognized and rewarded in our society?

Summary
Parenting is recognized as a demanding yet deeply fulfilling role. Research shows that while parents often feel tired, they also find joy and meaning in caring for their children. Moms, in particular, tend to report higher levels of exhaustion compared to dads but still rate their parenting experiences as more meaningful than their work lives. This highlights the importance of acknowledging the challenges and rewards of parenthood.
