Navigating Twin Parenthood
Expecting twins can be a whirlwind of emotions. One moment you’re overjoyed, and the next, you’re wondering how you’ll manage two babies at once. I recall the shock when my partner and I learned we were having twins during our first ultrasound. The technician revealed one heartbeat, and just when I thought it was over, there was another one. It took a bit for the reality to sink in, especially since we had to rethink our nursery plans!

Fast forward two and a half years, and I can confidently say that if we can do it, you can too. While the journey may seem overwhelming initially, with some preparation, you’ll find joy in the chaos. Here are my top tips to help you thrive during those early days with your little ones.

  1. Sleep Less Than You Think
Sleep is essential, but you might be surprised at how little you can function on. I always believed I needed eight hours until my twins changed that perspective. While some lucky parents might have twins that sleep on the same schedule, it’s common for them to be on different rhythms. Just remember, this phase is temporary, and you can indeed survive on fewer hours of sleep than you thought possible.
  2. Simultaneous Mischief
Twins can be a delightful challenge when it comes to timing. As infants, they rarely nap together, but as they grow, they’ll often mimic each other. This is great for keeping them together, but it can also mean double trouble. Expect twin A to follow twin B’s lead, which may involve mischief you just warned against!
  3. Double Up
To minimize conflicts, invest in two of everything—bottles, toys, you name it. While sharing is important, trying to teach this lesson while mediating fights over a toy is not the best approach. We even chose different colors for cups and spoons to help them recognize what belonged to whom, cutting down on disputes from the get-go.
  4. Cribs: One or Two?
You might think you need two cribs, but this isn’t always the case. Depending on your twins’ size and sleeping habits, you might find they can share a crib comfortably for a while.
