While they couldn’t measure fetal brain activity directly, they monitored heart rates instead. Previous research showed that when late-term fetuses hear familiar sounds, their heart rates tend to slow down. During the study, when a stranger recited the familiar nursery rhyme, the babies’ heart rates decreased. In contrast, when they heard a new rhyme, their heart rates remained unchanged. So, while they may not have fully learned the rhyme, the study highlighted how important a mother’s voice is to her developing baby. “When a mother speaks, the fetus not only hears it, but also feels the vibrations throughout the spine,” Dr. Carter added.
