Why We Opt for Staycations Over Travel

As my son approaches his teenage years, he’s been diving into American history, and we thought a trip to the National Mall and the Smithsonian would be a great way to spend some quality time together this summer. I often refer to this as “the classic DC experience,” but to be honest, I’m not entirely sure what that even means, since we’ve never successfully made that journey as a family. We genuinely planned an epic adventure to Washington, DC this year, but alas, “planned” is the operative word here.

If this scenario sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.

We began diligently saving, setting aside a specific amount each month for our vacation fund. By April, it looked like we were on track to meet our goal! I felt like a financial superstar. But then, reality hit when we took our two oldest kids to the orthodontist, only to find out they both needed braces. The staggering estimate left me feeling light-headed.

Suddenly, we faced a dilemma: should we use our hard-earned vacation savings on a trip to DC, ignoring the orthodontist’s advice, or invest it in braces and enter a long-term payment plan?

You can probably guess which option we chose. We canceled the trip and handed over our vacation funds to the orthodontist. It was disappointing, but ultimately the right decision for our family. Honestly, this seems to be our pattern. My partner, Mia, and I both work in education, and we live on a tight budget. We manage our mortgage and ensure our kids are well-fed and dressed appropriately, but when it comes to the luxuries—like family vacations—something always seems to arise. More often than not, our vacation fund gets diverted to unexpected, yet necessary expenses.

Last year, we had grand plans for Hawaii. We started saving, and then—bam!—our car broke down. The year before that, we aimed for a family cruise, but surprise! Our washer and dryer needed replacing. Sure, we’ve managed a few vacations. When I was pursuing my graduate studies, I was invited to speak at a conference in a remote area. The school covered part of the expenses, so we made it a family trip. It sounded like a fantastic, budget-friendly idea until we arrived in one of the dullest towns I’ve ever seen. The hotel pool was the highlight for the kids—and me, if I’m being honest. While it was affordable, it wasn’t quite what you envision when dreaming of a family getaway.

I don’t want to paint us as perpetual vacation flops. There was that one time we made it to Disneyland, and it was a blast for everyone! However, it seems like there’s always something that gets in the way of our family trips. Does this mean we should be more financially savvy? Should we invest in higher-quality appliances? Or maybe trade our kids in for ones with straighter teeth?

Honestly, I don’t think so. I believe it’s just the nature of family life and the challenges that come with it. I find myself scrolling through social media, seeing friends whisking their families away on extravagant vacations to Europe, frolicking around Stonehenge or exploring Iceland, and I can’t help but wonder if I’m missing the mark while they’re hitting the bullseye. I can’t quite grasp how some families manage to escape to exotic locales, while ours often ends up huddled in my mother’s living room, nervously awaiting the moment my stepdad forgets we’re there and strolls out in his underwear.

But if you, too, find yourself caught in this frustrating cycle of saving for a summer vacation only to have it derailed by unexpected expenses, know that you’re not alone. Despite our best intentions, life often has other plans.

Don’t let this discourage you. Sometimes, life just doesn’t go our way. Will it improve? I can’t say for sure; I haven’t reached that point yet. But I remain hopeful. In the meantime, let’s make the most of our backyard adventures. Take the kids for a local hike, pitch a tent in the living room, string up fairy lights, roast some marshmallows, and pretend you’re at Yosemite. The true treasure lies in family bonding, and while we’d all prefer to enjoy that time far from Mount Laundry, sometimes that’s just not feasible. It doesn’t mean we can’t create meaningful experiences right where we are. I’ve learned to cherish our summer staycations and appreciate what we have, even if it doesn’t involve luxurious getaways.

In summary, while family vacations can often feel out of reach due to unexpected expenses, it’s important to focus on the value of time spent together, even if it’s at home. Embracing everyday moments can be just as rewarding as any trip.
