Breastfeeding? Initially, it can be quite painful. Establishing a new daily routine? Overwhelming. Adjusting to the shifts in your relationship and life? Tough. And let’s not even start on sleep deprivation—it’s a real struggle.
These challenges have marked what I can only describe as the most difficult year of my life—my first year as a mother of twins. However, surprisingly, none of these aspects are what I would label as the hardest part of parenting.
A few months back, my friend Sarah visited, and I was thrilled to see her and have some extra hands around the house. I readily accepted her help with laundry and even asked her to cook a few meals. In my fog of exhaustion, I naively thought she might wake up with me during the night to tackle the twins’ sleep issues together.
While we had a wonderful time catching up, we didn’t quite solve the sleep dilemma. I don’t know why I thought Sarah could magically resolve it. Perhaps it was just my optimistic side shining through. That’s when it struck me: the hardest aspect of parenting is that no one else can take on that role for you.
You might contend that the most challenging part of being a parent is making decisions that will impact your family. Whether you choose to bottle-feed, let your baby cry it out, or decide to return to work, it’s tough because the responsibility falls squarely on you.
Reflecting on my childhood, I remember wishing to grow up so I could be my own boss. Now, I realize that the gravity of that responsibility can be quite sobering. But there’s a silver lining—making a well-thought-out choice for the benefit of my family is incredibly rewarding. It lifts my spirits and strengthens my resolve.
And yes, a little sleep wouldn’t hurt either!

The weight of that responsibility can feel heavy, but it is also incredibly validating.
