Believe it or not, I’m actually looking forward to my third and final C-section. While major abdominal surgery might not be on everyone’s list of exciting events, my previous experiences have shaped my perspective.
Before you judge my enthusiasm, let me explain. Having undergone two C-sections already, I know the drill. Yes, there will be moments of anxiety, discomfort, and tough recovery days ahead. However, my situation necessitates a C-section. My first delivery turned into an emergency classical C-section after 40 hours of labor due to my son’s distress. A classical C-section involves a vertical incision high on the uterus, making vaginal delivery a risky option for me. Even the most open-minded midwife wouldn’t consider a VBAC in my case (I even reached out to an expert to confirm).
My second C-section was scheduled, and it was genuinely a wonderful experience. It not only helped me heal from the trauma of my first birth but also felt physically pleasant. The medical staff effectively managed my pain. I didn’t feel discomfort until the day after the operation, and even then, it was minimal. I managed to avoid prescription painkillers once I returned home. While my baby had some nursing challenges, the overall hospital stay was enjoyable, thanks to my careful planning.
As I prepare for this next adventure, here are four perks I’m excited about:
1. Concrete Planning for My Older Kids
Being a planner at heart, I’ve learned that having a strategy reduces my anxiety, especially for significant life events. While my boys won’t be able to visit during the C-section, I look forward to seeing them as soon as I’m back in my room. Knowing the exact date and time of my baby’s arrival weeks ahead allows for easier scheduling of help from family and friends. A planned C-section makes coordinating support much simpler for everyone involved.
2. Being Well-Rested for Baby’s Arrival
During my first C-section, I was so exhausted that I fell asleep, and the anesthesiologist had to wake me just in time for my son’s birth. It was a terrible experience. The second time, I arrived at the hospital bright and early, fully prepped and ready for the day. We even shared a lovely, restful nap in recovery. This time around, I feel even more composed and prepared. After a full night’s sleep, I will meet my baby without any apprehension.
3. A Few Days of Responsibility-Free Hospital Stay
While I will be caring for a newborn, I relish the idea of having a break from the daily grind. In the hospital, I won’t have to worry about cooking, cleaning, or refereeing sibling disputes. I’ll have the luxury of focusing solely on snuggling my baby and recovering. When my older kids visit, all I need to do is enjoy their company—reading, coloring, or cuddling. The hospital staff will take care of everything else, allowing me to cherish these moments without the usual responsibilities.
4. Quality Sleep During the Initial Nights
Many mothers I know who delivered vaginally only got one night in the hospital—what a strange policy! After my first C-section, I enjoyed four nights, and three after my second. While I admire moms who room in with their babies, I learned it’s not for me—I couldn’t get a wink of sleep. So, I let my second baby stay in the nursery for a couple of hours each night, which significantly aided my recovery. Sleep is essential for healing, especially after major surgery, and knowing my baby is in good hands allows me to rest. Those nights of undisturbed sleep are invaluable.
As I approach my third C-section, I feel like a seasoned veteran. I know what to expect both during and after the procedure. I could concentrate on potential risks, but I prefer to focus on the positives. Most of the time, everything goes smoothly, and being overly cautious won’t change that. Embracing the benefits of a planned C-section makes me even more excited to welcome my baby into the world.
Every birth is beautiful, and viewing mine through a lens of gratitude only enhances my anticipation.
