The Aftermath of a Friendship: My Experience with Online Bullying

Have you ever stumbled across a hurtful comment online? Who am I kidding—of course you have. But how many of you have faced a cruel remark personally? It stings, doesn’t it? It’s unsettling to realize that a stranger, from the safety of their home, took a moment to belittle you based on something you shared. That was my reality a few months ago.

After recounting my journey with a close friend—a friendship that crumbled when I discovered I was pregnant with my first child—I published an article to share my story. In a bid to protect both her privacy and my own, I kept the details vague, mentioning only fragments of our conversations.

However, soon after my article went live, I was bombarded with malicious comments on my Instagram from members of this friend’s family. They unleashed a torrent of insults, targeting me as a person and a mother. Ironically, once they had their say, they removed their comments, which left me wondering why they felt the need to hide their words if they were so firm in their beliefs.

Despite the negativity, I woke up the next morning with my usual smile. My two children rushed to my bed, showering me with love. The good things in my life remained unchanged, even in the face of their hurtful words. These individuals, who knew nothing about my life as a mother, a writer, or a friend, sought to diminish my spirit from behind their screens. But I realized I had the power to rise above it.

Sure, I could have let their insults affect me, wallowing in their negativity. Instead, I chose to embrace my identity as a mother, wife, daughter, employee, and friend with renewed confidence. Perhaps you’ve experienced similar hurtful words that made you question your choices. If so, remember: don’t allow someone else’s darkness to overshadow your light.

If you ever face online harassment that escalates, take it seriously. Capture screenshots of each comment, avoid engaging or provoking further, and keep your loved ones informed. This is not something to handle alone.

After my ordeal, my mom sent me a powerful quote that resonated deeply: “Don’t get angry or enraged or insulted. Rise above the bulls**t. Flick your light back on, and shine it brighter than ever, and fall so deeply in love with your own life that anyone who tried to wrong you becomes a laughable, ridiculous, distant memory.”

I absolutely love that last part—falling so deeply in love with your own life. Internet bullying is nonsensical, and I often find myself scrolling through comments, astounded at the cruelty people display towards strangers. Most of these individuals wouldn’t dare say such things in person.

It’s disheartening to see women attack one another instead of offering support. When will we stop shaming each other for our choices? Whether you breastfeed or not, whether you work or stay home, it’s your life to cherish!

This is a safe space for you. I want you to know that I support you, no matter your choices. They are right for you and your family. You are resilient. You can rise above the negativity, and you will.
