Dear Jamie Thompson,

It seems you may have missed the point.

Recently, Jamie Thompson and her partner, Riley Harper, were spotted at an event with two prominent political figures, sparking a wave of reactions on social media. Many people expressed their discomfort over the sight of a progressive icon mingling with conservative leaders. Jamie felt compelled to address the question: “What is a liberal celebrity doing with someone who holds such differing views?”

In her response, she emphasized having friendships with a diverse range of individuals, reminding everyone that our differences should be celebrated. Jamie humorously pointed out that while everyone was focused on her companions, no one noticed she was using the latest smartphone.

However, it seems Jamie overlooks the privilege inherent in her position. As a queer, nonbinary individual and a parent to a transgender child, I actively engage in the fight for not only my rights but also those of my entire community. While I wholeheartedly believe in kindness, I’m weary of the expectation that marginalized voices must always be patient and understanding, especially when faced with those who aim to diminish our rights and humanity.

It’s frustrating to see this feel-good narrative shared widely as if it embodies hope and understanding between opposing viewpoints. My rights as a queer person aren’t negotiable, and I refuse to simply “agree to disagree” with anyone who doesn’t see me as an equal.

The reality is that members of the LGBTQIA+ community face violence, discrimination, and neglect. As the Supreme Court deliberates on critical cases affecting our employment rights, my existence—and the existence of my child—is under scrutiny. My ability to thrive is jeopardized by judges who were appointed by conservative individuals who often disregard the rights of LGBTQIA+ people.

Jamie’s perspective misses the mark. It isn’t the responsibility of the queer community to celebrate friendships with those who deny our equality. Such alliances can inadvertently bolster the beliefs of those who harbor transphobia and homophobia. They often use these examples to validate their prejudiced views.

While I can be respectful towards individuals with differing beliefs, true friendship is built on mutual support and unconditional love. Jamie’s message doesn’t resonate as one of genuine compassion; it feels more like an attempt to avoid discomfort. She had an opportunity to advocate for those of us not living in the spotlight, but instead of addressing the problematic views of her companions, she could have said something like this: “This person has made mistakes, but here’s how I’m helping him understand our community better.”

Furthermore, where is the acknowledgment from the political figures regarding their relationship with Jamie? A true ally would actively support those they care about, not merely tolerate them while clinging to outdated beliefs. If there’s been a genuine change of heart, we would like to hear about it, but I’m not holding my breath.

Disagreements about LGBTQIA+ rights are far more profound than debates over parenting choices or dietary preferences. This is about recognizing the humanity in everyone and ensuring equitable treatment regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

If we cannot find common ground on this fundamental principle, then friendship is simply not viable.

In summary, Jamie Thompson’s well-intentioned message falls short, failing to address the deeper implications of her friendships with those who do not support equal rights for all. True friendship requires a shared commitment to advocacy and support, not mere tolerance.
