Why I Let My Little One Call the Shots

I once heard a fellow mom share her secret weapon for soothing her endlessly fussy baby: bouncing on an exercise ball. So, she committed to it—day and night! When her partner returned from work, they’d trade off without even pausing for a meal.

Then there’s my friend, Sarah, who has a 1-year-old that simply won’t let her sit down when she’s holding him. And let’s not forget about Lisa, whose 2-year-old insisted she vacate her spot on the couch so he could have it—of course, she complied! (Because really, who wants to face a toddler meltdown?)

What does this tell us? We’re letting ourselves be ruled by tiny tyrants! They’re little overlords in diapers! Dictators in bibs! (I could keep going, but I’ll spare you.)

It’s absurd, but we willingly play along to keep the peace, much like those mean girls in middle school whose approval we desperately sought, even when they treated us poorly. After all, upsetting the ones in charge of our sleep isn’t worth the risk! Most parents will go to great lengths to avoid a tantrum at the dinner table, a meltdown in the grocery store, or the heart-wrenching cries of a newborn. Even if it means sacrificing comfort or personal choice.

Sometimes, I feel a bit embarrassed that I—an intelligent, confident adult—let myself be bossed around by the littlest members of my family. Shouldn’t the person calling the shots at least be able to say “shots” without a lisp? Shouldn’t the one who wears the pants in the family actually be in pants instead of diapers?

But my kids may not have the words or stature, yet their volume and determination are undeniable. I’m just not willing to start World War III over trivial matters. So, when my kids say jump, I respond, “Sure, sweetheart! Like a kangaroo or a bunny?”

In summary, while it’s easy to feel a bit silly for letting our little ones call the shots, it’s often the path of least resistance. After all, a little compromise goes a long way in maintaining harmony at home!
