When it comes to starting a family, one of the first discussions most couples have revolves around finances. My partner and I were no exception. We wanted to know what life would look like with a baby and how to manage our finances accordingly.
We got married later in life, and by the time we received that positive pregnancy test, we were in a stable financial position. Both of us had been building our careers for over a decade, so the financial implications of having a baby didn’t intimidate us like it might for some.
However, a significant question arose: Would I continue working after our baby arrived? Growing up, I envisioned myself as a stay-at-home mom, and I hold immense respect for those who dedicate their time to shaping their children’s lives. Many stay-at-home moms I know are incredibly inspiring. We had even budgeted for me to be at home full-time, but ultimately, I chose to work part-time after our son was born. Here are my main reasons:
- I Love My Job: If I didn’t enjoy what I do, it would have been an easy choice to stay at home.
- Debt-Free Goals: We are determined to live without debt, including our mortgage. My part-time income helps us save for a bigger house in a better school district.
- Now is the Right Time: With just one little one, it’s easier to work. He’s still at an age where he enjoys being held by others and doesn’t mind going to the babysitter.
- Most Moms Work: While not every stay-at-home mom does, many find ways to contribute financially, whether through freelancing, teaching, or running online businesses. While I could do something similar, my current job pays significantly more.
- Part-Time Opportunity: I’m fortunate that my company allows me to work part-time, which is rare and hard to find.
Working part-time has been ideal for my family. I can spend quality time with my son, and he gets to nap in his own crib. As he grows, I’ll be there for the important moments and to support his learning. I can manage home responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed, and our weekends aren’t consumed by chores. Plus, I still contribute to our family’s finances.
So, will I always be a working mom? Who knows! For now, the balance works for me. The 24 hours a week I put in for the pay I receive feels worth it. I truly enjoy my job, and it keeps me engaged and fulfilled.
