Navigating Marriage and Parenthood: Our Unconventional Approach? Just Brush Off the Small Stuff

Raising children, managing adult responsibilities, and maintaining a marriage simultaneously can feel overwhelming. My partner, Jake, and I often lament that the brief respites from the chaos of our lives are so fleeting that we seldom feel truly rested. We liken it to driving on a sticky highway in the South, where bugs continually splatter against the windshield. Just when we manage to wipe a few away, more come crashing in, making it difficult to see the road ahead with any clarity.

The significant challenges—like worrying about our child’s declining reading skills, handling a serious medical issue, negotiating with the insurance company over storm damage, or contemplating therapy needs due to our child’s fears—seem to come at us in rapid succession. You’d think that with such pressing issues, we’d cherish the smaller dilemmas as manageable tasks. “I might not have a concrete solution for my child’s education, but at least I can change that light bulb!” you might assume.

However, what we’ve discovered is that we’re so drained from tackling the major crises that we allow the minor nuisances—those pesky ‘gnats’—to linger. Instead of fixing them, we find ourselves laughing about them.

Absurdities of Everyday Life

Take, for instance, the plastic knob on Jake’s bedside lamp that has been missing for four years. The worst-case scenario? He reads in darkness. The best-case? I pass him my lamp’s knob so we can both have light. It’s absurd, yet we chuckle over it.

Or consider our beloved coffee maker, which recently lost its carafe. In my caffeine-induced desperation, I broke my own rule and ordered a replacement while cleaning up the broken glass. It arrived, but it was too small! Now, we prop it up with a spoon to get our morning coffee. It’s a jerry-rigged setup that would make any handyman cringe.

Every time I navigate around the garage door’s malfunctioning sensor, I can’t help but laugh at my own acrobatics. I often share the ridiculousness of my daily gymnastic feats with Jake, who finds joy in our shared absurdities. We giggle, not just because we are exhausted, but because laughter keeps the atmosphere light amidst the chaos of our lives with young children.

Who else but us would balance a coffee pot with a knife sticking out? It’s these moments of levity that remind us to not take everything too seriously and to find humor in the small stuff.
