Sharing the Mental Load: A Journey Through Responsibilities

Last autumn, I faced a significant emotional challenge due to the overwhelming burden of responsibilities I was carrying. I found myself on the couch, in tears, trying to convey to my partner, Jake, just how much stress I was under, particularly regarding tasks he seemed unaware of.

You know the kind of stress I mean—the “mental load” that comes with managing a household. This includes everything from scheduling doctor appointments and budgeting finances to ensuring the pantry is stocked with essentials, planning family gatherings, and keeping track of everyone’s commitments. It’s a never-ending list of tasks that often goes unnoticed until they’re left undone.

Implementing a Plan

In an effort to address this issue, we decided to implement a plan to share these responsibilities. We created a list that outlined tasks for Jake to take on while I handled the rest. He would manage the paperwork from the kids’ school, contact utility companies regarding bills, and be the one to arrange medical appointments. Additionally, we agreed that he would take care of his family’s obligations while I would manage mine, including remembering birthdays and checking in on relatives.

This arrangement seemed straightforward until the holiday season arrived. As we all know, the holidays bring a unique set of pressures, especially concerning the mental load. It’s a chaotic time, filled with countless behind-the-scenes tasks necessary to create a joyful atmosphere for everyone involved.

The Holiday Challenge

The trouble arose with Jake’s 90-year-old aunt, who generously sends us a monetary gift each year before the holidays. Traditionally, I would thank her, but this time, it was Jake’s responsibility. Despite my reminders, he assured me he had taken care of it, so I let it go—until we attended a family gathering.

When I greeted his aunt, I expressed my gratitude for the gift, only to be met with confusion as she informed me that Jake had not, in fact, reached out to her. I felt a wave of guilt wash over me, as I knew how much this meant to her. I quickly mumbled an apology, feeling the need to explain that I had been overwhelmed with work and had asked him to handle it.

After a brief exchange, I excused myself to gather my thoughts in the nearest restroom, overwhelmed by the realization that we were back at square one. The expectation remained that I would be the one to thank her, despite our agreed-upon division of labor. I found myself even more frustrated when I confronted Jake, only to learn he had simply sent her an email to express his thanks—an email!

Lessons Learned

In my frustration, I insisted that he personally apologize to his aunt for failing to follow through correctly. She was forgiving, but her disappointment lingered in the air. Since that debacle, our journey of sharing responsibilities has continued, albeit with its ups and downs. While he does follow through on some of his tasks, he often requires extensive reminders, which undermines the very purpose of our arrangement.

Looking back almost a year later, I can reflect on the incident with a hint of humor, though I still feel a twinge of annoyance. It’s a reminder that navigating shared responsibilities in a relationship can be fraught with challenges. Conclusion

In summary, while our approach to distributing household tasks has evolved, it remains a work in progress. Jake is making strides to take on more, but trust and accountability are still developing. It’s a journey that requires patience and understanding.
