In the realm of special needs parenting, we often find ourselves vocal advocates for change. However, we frequently overlook sharing the profound joys, blessings, and lessons we encounter along the way. I want the world to understand the richness of life with Down syndrome.
First and foremost, please don’t feel pity for me. My life is filled with so much more.
When I navigate through the grocery store, I receive countless smiles from passersby. Strangers pause to admire my daughter, and they often tell me how beautiful she is. They remind me that I am indeed blessed.
I experience more.
As I reflect on my daughter’s journey, she is just three years old, and it’s tempting to compare her to her peers and fret over what she hasn’t achieved. Instead, I choose to embrace the beauty of her unique path.
I am gifted with more time.
Each stage of childhood lasts longer for her, and I become her safe haven. While it took her longer to walk and talk, the effort is worthwhile; the joy of her accomplishments is all the more rewarding.
I encounter more.
Every day, I celebrate small miracles. Just yesterday, she crawled independently for the first time, something we’ve worked toward for years. The sight of her newfound strength brought tears of joy as I witnessed the fruits of our labor.
I worry less about her social life now. As she began school, her classmates welcomed her with open arms. They hold her hand, run to greet her, and enthusiastically call her name. It’s a connection that means more than words can express.
I experience more.
In the Down syndrome community, I’ve formed powerful connections and friendships. I’ve shared tears of grief with other mothers who understand the struggles because they have walked similar paths.
I have more people cheering for my daughter on a weekly basis than some may have throughout their entire lives.
I’ve observed my older child embrace diversity. Her patience, empathy, and understanding have blossomed, making her a better person thanks to her sister’s influence.
I get more.
I’ve had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of students about awareness. Their understanding of my daughter’s challenges fosters compassion that I get to witness firsthand.
I receive more.
My friends have rallied around our family, providing love and support that has deepened our connections. Vulnerability invites stronger bonds, and I’ve seen my relationships flourish in ways I never anticipated.
I have met wonderful therapists and educators committed to my daughter’s success.
Please, don’t feel sorrow for my family. Yes, there are challenges and sacrifices, but the hard work yields gratifying results. Our struggles have shaped us into better individuals. We experience more joy, fulfillment, and kindness. Our journey has taught us invaluable lessons about compassion and humanity.
We gain more.
In this journey of motherhood, we are united as women who embrace our unique experiences. We are not just mothers; we are daughters, friends, and partners seeking spaces to share beyond parenting. For further insights, visit one of our other blog posts at Home Insemination Kit.
