On a bright Saturday morning, I received an unexpected call from my partner’s mother, informing us that she could no longer babysit our 5-month-old son, Leo. Typically, we are quite adaptable, but on that day, we had planned to attend a rock concert in San Antonio, Texas—a journey of two hours from our home. Faced with a quick decision, we weighed the options: forfeit the concert and our ticket costs or bring Leo along for the ride.
After a brief discussion, we felt a surge of spontaneity and decided to pack up our essentials. Dressed in a vintage rock onesie and tiny sneakers, we secured Leo in his car seat. Before heading to the venue, we made a stop at a nearby sporting goods store to pick up infant earmuffs to safeguard Leo’s delicate ears. As we arrived at the concert location, numerous questions flooded our minds. Would babies be allowed? Could we bring a stroller? Would there be an extra charge for Leo?
I quickly realized that confidence was crucial. If you stride in as if you belong, there’s a good chance you won’t be questioned—and thankfully, that was the case for us. We managed to enter with our oversized stroller without any additional fees for Leo.
Although the experience was exhausting, we had a fantastic time. Leo was introduced to the sounds of Bush, Chevelle, Stone Temple Pilots, Primus, and Nine Inch Nails all in one day. Admittedly, there were hurdles, like changing Leo’s diaper on a blanket laid out on the pavement, but we made it work.
Since that inaugural adventure, we’ve taken Leo to another concert, this time to witness the legendary Fleetwood Mac when he was 10 months old. While he may not recall these moments, I’m certain he will appreciate the photos that capture our family’s rock ‘n’ roll journey together. Here are several compelling reasons to consider taking your infant to concerts as well:
1. Cost-Free Entry for Infants
Most venues allow infants to attend concerts for free, especially if you carry them in a baby carrier. Just be sure to check the venue’s policies regarding age restrictions. Embrace your confidence because when else will you get to take your child to concerts without cost?
2. Music Aids Development
Research indicates that exposure to music can greatly benefit a child’s physical, cognitive, and emotional growth. Just ensure you have earmuffs to protect their ears. Even with earmuffs, infants can enjoy the muffled sounds and vibrant lights, which may foster creativity and language development.
3. Capture Adorable Moments
Concerts provide an excellent opportunity for unique family photos. Dress your baby in a band tee and some trendy shoes for charming snapshots. Your child will thank you later for those rock-inspired baby pictures!
4. No Babysitter Required
Taking your little one with you eliminates the need to arrange for a babysitter, opening up more opportunities for concert-going. This also creates valuable family bonding time. Initially, I believed motherhood meant giving up my concert-going days, but I soon learned that many venues are family-friendly, allowing us to enjoy concerts together.
5. Increased Adaptability
Introducing your baby to loud sounds and bright lights can help them become more adaptable. Over time, they may adjust well to noisy environments, allowing them to sleep through everyday sounds. This desensitization is beneficial for maintaining your regular activities, whether you need to vacuum or blow-dry your hair.
While bringing an infant to a loud concert may seem daunting, it can also be an enjoyable experience that creates lasting memories. I’m grateful we took that leap, as who knows if Leo will have the chance to see Fleetwood Mac in the future. Just because you have a child doesn’t mean your life has to come to a halt; rather, it’s an opportunity to incorporate them into your past hobbies. Your baby will appreciate the wonderful experiences they had growing up, even if they don’t remember them.
