At one point, someone remarked that I “didn’t seem like someone” who required SNAP benefits to help with grocery expenses. I was taken aback, as I pondered what it means to “look needy.” Should I appear disheveled or wear worn-out clothing to validate my financial struggles? Regardless of my appearance, the truth is that I rely on these benefits to provide for my family.

A prevalent myth suggests that individuals who access government assistance should fit a specific image. What exactly does that image entail? Must one don shabby attire or exude an aura of defeat to qualify for help? Yet, to qualify for SNAP, individuals must meet certain income criteria, indicating that many beneficiaries are just everyday people—gasp—living regular lives. We wear typical clothes, drive average cars, and utilize smartphones (in my case, an Android).

Having a well-styled haircut or a fashionable handbag says little about one’s financial situation. A newer vehicle doesn’t necessarily signify affluence, nor does owning the latest smartphone. In today’s world, these items are often necessities.

When people observe someone using SNAP benefits while holding a smartphone, they often jump to conclusions about how that individual can afford such luxuries. However, you never know their story; perhaps they purchased the device refurbished from Amazon or eBay, or they’re paying it off in installments. Maybe it was a gift or provided by their employer. Regardless, owning a smartphone does not diminish their need for assistance—especially as it connects them to vital resources, including employment opportunities.

As a full-time working single mother, I require internet access on my phone. My job sometimes demands urgent communication, and I need to be reachable, especially when picking my son up from school. On days without school, I often work from a picnic table while my son plays. A smartphone is not just a luxury; it’s essential for modern parenting, where school communications and updates are predominantly conducted through apps.

It’s crucial to remember that SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is exactly that—a supplement. It helps families cover the gap between their income and the rising cost of groceries. Most families receiving SNAP benefits cannot afford a month’s worth of food without assistance. Moreover, the misuse of food stamps is exceptionally low, with only about 1% of benefits illegally exchanged for cash, according to the Agriculture Department. Additionally, studies show that every dollar spent on food stamps can generate about $1.70 in economic activity.

As a single mom living in a studio apartment, I strive to manage my finances wisely, but groceries can be a significant expense, especially with a growing child who loves fresh fruit. When I first became independent, SNAP was instrumental in easing my financial worries about food.

Despite the stigma attached to using SNAP, which is often glaringly obvious when checking out at the grocery store, I still enjoy presenting myself well, even if my clothes aren’t extravagant. I can only imagine the judgment from those behind me in line when they see me swipe my SNAP card.

It’s important to recognize that outward appearances do not determine wealth. Most everyday individuals are wearing clothing they’ve owned for years, often bought on sale. It’s not uncommon to prioritize budget-friendly shopping. Judgments based on appearances can be misleading; many families live paycheck to paycheck and rely on government assistance to alleviate the financial pressure.

So next time you see someone with a SNAP card in a nice wallet, pause before making assumptions. The reality is that many working families rely on SNAP to prevent financial hardship. Material items like smartphones and cars are often necessities that help individuals maintain employment and care for their families.

As we move forward, let’s strive to eliminate judgment and focus on supporting one another. Everyone is doing their best in a challenging world.
