Parenting often involves a bit of cleverness and the occasional fib, but a recent study suggests that this tendency may be more pronounced with sons. Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research revealed that while adults generally exhibit honesty around children, they are notably more truthful in the presence of daughters compared to sons. This raises intriguing questions about societal values—do parents prioritize honesty more for girls? Are girls penalized more harshly for dishonest behavior than their male counterparts?
“Maybe it’s more socially acceptable for men to be dishonest, while the same isn’t true for women,” says Brittany Lang, one of the study’s authors, in a recent interview. “We still don’t know if this behavior is rooted in evolutionary traits aimed at instilling honesty in daughters or if it’s shaped by cultural influences.”
The Study
The study engaged 152 parents who were asked to flip two coins—one green and one blue—and report their outcomes. If both coins showed green, they would win a prize. Importantly, the parents knew they weren’t being observed, which led to some interesting findings. The chance of flipping two greens is 25%, but many parents reported much higher winning rates, hinting at dishonesty.
When parents flipped coins in front of their young children, aged three to six, their reporting accuracy improved. “Parents want their kids to see them as honest and to model good behavior,” Lang explained.
Gender Differences in Reporting
However, the results varied based on the child’s gender. Parents flipping coins in front of their daughters reported winning around 25% of the time—aligning with the expected honest rate. In contrast, when sons were present, the reported winning percentage soared to 40%.
Lang emphasizes that children are observant and learn from their parents’ actions. So, it’s crucial to promote honesty regardless of gender.
