I still remember the first time my friend Jake changed a diaper. We were visiting some family friends who had just welcomed a beautiful baby girl. Knowing Jake was going to be a dad soon, I thought it would be great for him to help out. Well, you can imagine how that went.
Let’s just say, little Missy didn’t just pee—she decided to let loose right as Jake was changing her. The result? A mess that covered the nursery, the changing table, herself, and poor Jake. As a newbie in the diaper-changing world, I could see him questioning all of life’s decisions in that moment!
Every parent faces the infamous “poopsplosion” at some point, whether it’s in a car seat, during nap time, or even on your lap. Babies poop, and they do it a lot! Unless you have a live-in nanny (which most of us don’t), you’re bound to find yourself knee-deep in the mess at times, all because you love your child.
When we decided to cloth diaper our first baby, friends and family raised their eyebrows. “Are you seriously going to handle that mess?” they’d ask, or “What about the poop in your washing machine?” My response? If you can find me a parent who hasn’t had a poop mishap or put soiled clothes in the wash, I’d love to meet them.
In reality, modern cloth diapering can be quite straightforward and, believe it or not, often less messy than disposables. For newborns on breast milk or formula, there’s usually no need to rinse off solid waste before washing. Plus, with handy tools like diaper sprayers and devices such as the Spray Pal, you hardly touch the dirty diapers at all.
If you’re debating whether to cloth diaper your child, just give it a go. If your only concern is handling dirty diapers, you might want to reconsider that dream of having a maid! For more insights on the topic, check out this post from our other blog, Modern Family Blog.

In summary, cloth diapering doesn’t have to be as messy or daunting as many believe. With the right tools and mindset, you might find it easier than you expected!
