From the moment she entered the world, my eldest daughter has been a whirlwind of energy. A true free spirit, she’s always jumping, running, and exploring. When I first discovered I was pregnant, I envisioned a household filled with rambunctious boys like my husband and his brother. However, when I found out I was having a girl, my daydreams quickly shifted to frilly dresses and tea parties.

But as she grew into toddlerhood, I soon realized I had the best of both worlds: a daughter who embodied the spirit of a tomboy. I firmly believe in allowing children to embrace their individual interests, regardless of gender norms. My daughter thrived in activities like running, jumping, and playing with trains and cars. To help her channel all that energy, we even bought her a mini trampoline.

I can’t recount the number of times I watched her race down sidewalks, stumble, scrape her knees, and bounce right back up to continue the race. Once, she was sprinting up our concrete steps when she tripped, face-planting and splitting her forehead open. In a panic, we rushed her to urgent care, where she amazed us all by asking the doctor questions as he stitched her up instead of crying.

“Does she read? Make sure she reads every night! She’s smart!” the doctor advised me after examining her.

Not long after, she had another mishap—this time, while bouncing on our bed. She fell and hit her head against the wall, resulting in a scalped area that thankfully didn’t require stitches. Exhausted and overwhelmed, I called my mom to vent about my parenting skills. She just chuckled, reminding me that kids will be kids.

At a birthday party for a friend’s daughter, we arrived in a Thomas the Train shirt, surrounded by little girls in princess garb. While the theme was Candy Land, my daughter took it upon herself to pop every balloon in sight and, while running through the house, she accidentally crashed through the screen door. I offered to replace the damage, only to be met with laughter from the other parents who loved her adventurous spirit. I felt a pang of embarrassment, wondering why she couldn’t just play quietly like the others. Was my decision to let her be herself backfiring?

Then came the day that encapsulated her wild antics in one chaotic moment, teaching me to embrace the unexpected. I had mustered the courage to take both my young daughter and a newborn to the park on a cloudy fall day. We strolled through while she dashed around, playing on the playground with the baby snug in a front carrier.

After watching ducks at the lake, we ambled down the pier, where I pointed out a nearby seaplane to the baby. Suddenly, I heard my daughter shout for help. I turned to find her head stuck between the railings of the pier. My heart sank. I laughed at first, but then panic ensued as I realized she was completely wedged in. How did she even manage that?

As she whimpered, I felt my anxiety rise. I looked around for assistance but all the other families had vanished. The baby started crying, sensing my distress. I considered calling 911, imagining the headlines: “Child Rescued from Pier by Emergency Services.” Just as I was about to dial, a couple sprinted towards us, frantically speaking Spanish.

Despite the language barrier, they immediately assessed the situation. The husband examined the metal bars while the wife carefully checked my daughter’s head. With a knowing smile, the man directed her to gently push my daughter’s head down to where the bars were wider, and, just like that, she was free. We all exhaled in relief. I thanked them profusely; they waved me off with smiles, disappearing as quickly as they had arrived.

My daughter simply grinned and said, “I kinda wanted to see a fire truck!” I couldn’t help but laugh and hugged her. Despite the stress she brings, I wouldn’t change her for anything. Her adventurous nature often leads to chaos, but it also fills our lives with excitement and learning. Now in fourth grade, she’s surprisingly cautious and eager to help younger kids avoid mishaps.

That day, I chose to celebrate her uniqueness and the joy she brings to our lives, even when things get a bit out of hand.
