You know those moments in life when everything feels surreal, as if time itself has slowed down and you’re merely a spectator? That’s exactly what happened to me on my wedding day when I (not so gracefully) plunged into the river. Yes, I took a dive—on my wedding day!

After a decade of love and laughter, my partner and I decided to celebrate our union with an intimate backyard wedding at my parents’ riverside home. Once the ceremony concluded and guests began to mingle, we set out to capture those classic couple photos.

The scene was picturesque, with a charming dock and the clouds providing just the right backdrop. In a moment of sheer overconfidence, I excitedly asked my husband if he could “dip” me, just like they do on those dancing shows. Spoiler alert: I’m not a dancer, and he’d never attempted this before!

In that instant, time seemed to freeze… I spotted a flash of panic on my husband’s face. I felt gravity pulling me down as I let out a slow-motion “Baaaaabbbbbbeeeee!” And then—splash—I was completely submerged in the river.

As I resurfaced, I was relieved to find that my husband had also fallen in. The next few minutes were a whirlwind of laughter and disbelief as we tried to process what had just happened.

After we managed to pull ourselves out of the water and sneak through the neighbors’ yard, I found refuge in my parents’ bathroom. With the shock fading away, I took stock: my hair was a tangled mess, mascara was streaked down my face, and I looked like a drenched rat. Just as I was about to spiral into tears, my brother-in-law popped his head in and burst into laughter.

Instead of getting upset with him (though that crossed my mind), I joined in on the laughter. My sisters soon followed suit, and we were all in stitches. Dripping wet and disheveled, I realized that this was a moment to cherish—hilarious, unexpected, and perfectly imperfect.

Too often, we find ourselves trapped by the expectations of how life should unfold—what our weddings should look like, what motherhood should encompass, the ideal family vacation. We get so hung up on these ideals that we miss the beauty in the chaos.

My wedding didn’t resemble the fairy tale I had imagined, and yet it turned out to be the best day of my life. After untangling my hair and downing a generous shot of rum, Mother Nature decided to add her own twist, drenching us in a mid-Canadian downpour. As we waded barefoot through the rain, sharing laughs with our guests about my unexpected swim, I realized that I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson about motherhood and life: getting swept away in the “shoulds” keeps us from appreciating the present moment.

So next time:

  • You’re frazzled by your toddler’s epic tantrum in public,
  • Your family vacation goes hilariously wrong,
  • Or your day feels like a chaotic mess,

Let go of the expectations and embrace the moment for what it truly is. Choose the beautiful messiness, create memories, and own your unique story. That unexpected plunge into the river was a lesson I never anticipated, but it became a cherished memory—along with the inside joke of “Remember when you dropped me in the river on our wedding day?”
