Starbucks Introduces Emergency Catastrophe Pay for Employees Amid Crisis

In response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Starbucks has temporarily enhanced its catastrophe pay program to support its employees during these challenging times. With the virus spreading rapidly across the U.S., service workers, particularly those in bustling locations like Starbucks, are at heightened risk of exposure. For those showing symptoms without a diagnosis or known exposure, they can isolate at home for 24 hours and utilize catastrophe pay for all scheduled shifts for up to three days before resorting to their own sick time. Should they receive a diagnosis, the initial policy will take effect, allowing for extended leave if necessary.

Community Support Initiatives

Additionally, Starbucks is contributing to its Community United Partner (CUP) fund, which raises money to assist employees in need. The company is matching donations dollar-for-dollar for every 50 cents contributed.

In an open letter to employees and the public, Julia Thompson, Starbucks’ senior vice president, emphasized the company’s commitment to worker wellbeing, stating, “You should never have to choose between your job and taking care of your health.
