I’ve always had a soft spot for dogs. When it comes to welcoming a furry friend into my life, I firmly believe in adopting rather than shopping. So many wonderful dogs are waiting for homes, and choosing to adopt a rescue has been one of my best decisions to date. Our rescue dog has truly completed our family.
Back in 2012, I adopted my first rescue dog. After a cross-country move with my then-partner, we were eager to bring a dog into our lives. We ended up with a puppy from a pregnant dog that had been abandoned. We named her Bella, inspired by a beloved character from a favorite TV show. Bella was my little rescue angel, and my heart swelled with joy having her in our family. Unfortunately, after my breakup, my ex took Bella with him, but I still get to see her often.
For a while, I thought about getting another dog, but my new apartment with my son had a no-dog policy. Although we could visit Bella anytime, it just wasn’t the same. We longed for a dog to call our own. Fortunately, last year, my building changed its pet policy, and thus began what I like to call “Operation Doggo.” This time, I was determined to adopt a rescue, knowing how many dogs are waiting for loving homes.
Even with this commitment, I had specific criteria in mind. The most important rule? No puppies. As a single mom with a lively six-year-old, I didn’t need another small, chaotic creature to manage. I briefly considered adopting a senior dog, but with a young child, that didn’t seem like the best fit either. Size mattered too, given our compact living space.
I was surprised to discover a plethora of animal rescues on social media. I began following local organizations, hoping to find our new family member. One afternoon, while scrolling through my feed, I stumbled upon a face that would change our lives forever.
His name was Max, and he was looking for a new home after his owners had to take in another pet. Those soulful brown eyes and wise expression immediately captured my heart. Without hesitation, I sent an email and filled out the application.
The application process for adopting a rescue dog is thorough—understandably so, but it can be stressful. The questions range from your job details to how you would handle unexpected medical expenses. There were moments I questioned whether it was worth it, even considering if we should just get a hamster instead.
But after meeting Max, who we renamed Leo, I knew he was destined to be part of our family. He has seamlessly integrated into our lives, curling up next to me as I work and snuggling in bed with my son. He loves his walks in the neighborhood, eagerly gives kisses, and adores belly rubs. Essentially, he embodies everything one could hope for in a dog. He gets along well with Bella and other dogs we encounter, willingly accepting pets from passersby and enjoying the love from my son.
The most incredible part of having Leo? He has rescued me too. In the months leading up to his arrival, I struggled with my mental health. Having a dog has been a lifeline, drawing me out of the darkness. Taking him out for walks pushes me outside, even when I would rather stay in. Those moments of fresh air rejuvenate me. Remarkably, Leo seems to sense my emotions. When I’m feeling low, he’ll come over and rest his head in my lap, looking up at me with those big eyes. He’s a wonderful companion for my son, who finds joy in having someone to love and play with.
Now, our little family feels whole. My son and I have so much affection to share, and directing that love toward our furry friend brings us happiness. I don’t even mind when both Leo and my son sprawl across the bed, leaving me with little space. It warms my heart to know that Leo recognizes us as his family—the ones who care for him and will always have his back.
I may be a bit biased, but adopting a rescue dog is a fantastic choice. Even if you have specific preferences, there are breed-specific rescues available, and sadly, new dogs enter shelters every day. With countless dogs looking for homes, choosing to adopt should always be your first option. They have so much love to give, knowing you are the person who saved them from a less-than-ideal situation.
Leo deserved a loving family, just like all dogs do. But in reality, we didn’t just save him—he saved us.
