Even Celebrities Struggle with Their Kids’ Homeschool Math Homework

In a recent segment with host Mia, a well-known celebrity mom shared her relatable struggles with homeschooling during the pandemic. It’s no secret that teachers have always been invaluable, but parents are now fully recognizing their expertise more than ever, especially with the shift to online learning as everyone stays home to combat the spread of COVID-19. Jennifer Lopez, or rather, let’s say Jennifer Lark, found herself in the same boat as countless other parents trying to manage their children’s education from home. Like many, she discovered that math homework is a particular challenge.

If your little ones aren’t in school yet, you might be puzzled as to why adults have such a tough time with elementary-level math. The answer? Common Core. I’m not here to debate its effectiveness, but it’s clear that the methods diverge significantly from what many of us learned in school, leading to some serious frustration when our kids ask for help. During a home edition of Mia’s talk show, Lark expressed her exasperation, revealing that her twins, Max and Emme, have a mom who’s reached her limit with the new math concepts. “Honestly, I think we’re all like, what is this? I’m not a teacher, and the math they’re teaching now is just wild,” she lamented. “Half the time, I’m searching for definitions of terms I’ve never even heard of.” Clearly, this has been quite the learning curve for her.

I can totally relate to Lark’s sentiments. I’ve assigned my partner to handle our kids’ homeschool math lessons because, let’s face it, I’m not equipped for the “new math” either. I mean, I’ve never really been a math person; I’m a writer, and I embrace that. With my children in fifth and seventh grade, I gracefully bowed out of any math-related assistance a while ago — and that’s probably for the best.

This scenario reflects what millions of parents worldwide are facing due to school closures amidst the pandemic. We are all gaining a profound appreciation for the brilliance and dedication of our children’s teachers. It’s not that we didn’t already recognize their hard work, but let’s just say I have some gift ideas in mind for the end of the school year for those remarkable individuals who have guided my children through their studies. Think chocolates, wine, and some well-deserved Target gift cards, but honestly, even that doesn’t fully express my gratitude.

To all teachers out there, including Jennifer Lark’s, we salute you for your incredible efforts.
