‘COVID School’ Is Failing Many Families, and We’re Over It

This wasn’t the COVID-19 blog I envisioned writing. I intended to compile helpful resources—ways to discuss social distancing with kids, mental health tips for parents, links to mask vendors, and more. I still hope to create that post one day.

But right now, I struggle to find a moment to even take care of myself, and I’m at my wit’s end with everything COVID-related. COVID-dinners, COVID-exercise, COVID-grocery shopping, and of course, COVID-school.

Let’s Be Real

Can we just stop pretending this schooling is effective? If you’re one of those parents who insists it’s working for you, please spare me the details.

YOU? YOU’RE THE EXCEPTION. Congratulations! Now, please move on.

For the rest of us, this situation is absolutely crazy. It’s not functioning! My kids aren’t learning anything meaningful. We’ve missed countless Zoom sessions. Logging into platforms is a constant struggle, and our internet is perpetually slow.

Honestly, homeschooling was a breeze compared to whatever this COVID-school is. At least when we homeschooled on purpose, we had one dedicated parent overseeing it, and it only took a few hours a day—not even five days a week. Plus, we worked at our own pace.

Now, we’ve got two working adults and four kids—one of whom is a wild toddler—all trying to share one Wi-Fi network in the same house.

The Reality of COVID-School

I don’t care if it’s pass/incomplete. I can’t fathom how anyone is managing graded assignments right now without losing their sanity.

This whole situation needs to be called off. CANCELED. Just let me focus on keeping everyone alive while juggling work, ensuring the house doesn’t become a total disaster, worrying about my parents, sourcing masks, and planning grocery trips. Did I mention my job? Oh, and let’s not forget that I have a three-year-old bouncing off the walls!

CANCEL COVID SCHOOL.

For those who feel they’re being exemplary parents by ensuring their kids don’t fall behind, go ahead and buy workbooks or enroll your children in online enrichment programs. I would gladly trade a quarter of a school year for my peace of mind.

And before anyone accuses me of being “anti-teacher,” let me clarify: I believe keeping this charade going is doing a disservice to educators. Let them take a break! CONTINUE PAYING THEM to do… nothing. It’s a brilliant idea! I’m serious.

Or better yet, let’s use this time for teachers to genuinely check in on the students they’re concerned about. They should be connecting parents with mental health and financial resources instead of stressing over lessons.

The reality is that most teachers are feeling overwhelmed, just like the rest of us—too many demands and too little time.

Conclusion

“School” shouldn’t be a priority right now. That’s the bottom line.

I make no apologies for the number of times I’ve expressed frustration here. THIS IS ALL SO EXHAUSTING.

In summary, COVID-school is failing many parents and children, leading to frustration and chaos. The focus should shift to mental health and well-being rather than academic performance during these challenging times.
