Get ready to welcome a delightful new addition to your family’s weekly routine! Former First Lady Michelle Obama is teaming up with Random House and PBS to bring joy to kids at home with a reading series that begins today.
In a move aimed at combating boredom during these challenging times, the “Mondays with Michelle Obama” series launches as part of the “Read Together, Be Together” initiative from Penguin Random House and PBS KIDS’ “Read-Along” program. Over the next four Mondays, Mrs. Obama will read a beloved children’s book live, starting tonight and continuing through May 11.
The series will include a lineup of cherished titles: Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, kicks things off on April 20; followed by Tom Fletcher’s There’s a Dragon in Your Book, illustrated by Greg Abbott, on April 27; Eliza Wheeler’s Miss Maple’s Seeds on May 4; and wrapping up with Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar on May 11.
“I have always found joy in reading aloud, whether it was with my own kids or as First Lady,” Obama shared on PBS’s site. “As families face stress, I hope to offer a moment of respite through these stories and give parents a much-needed break.” And let’s be honest, while parents appreciate a breather, kids could benefit from a change of pace too. They’re used to socializing with friends and teachers, making this series a welcome escape.
Michelle joins a star-studded lineup that includes Dolly Parton, who hosts “Goodnight with Dolly,” and author Mo Willems, who has been engaging children with his “Lunch Doodles.” With many kids needing to read a staggering 47 books before bedtime, the more stories, the merrier!
Imagine having Michelle Obama in your living room, reading a classic to help lull your children to sleep. It’s a magical way to end the day for kids of all ages.
