Tasha Williams, a 31-year-old attorney and the proud mother of her 7-month-old son, Noah, shares her experiences with breastfeeding.
Did you feel apprehensive about breastfeeding?
“Oh, definitely! I had heard so many stories about how painful it could be and how challenging it was to have others care for your baby if you were exclusively breastfeeding. But honestly, I found it to be quite the opposite. It’s incredibly convenient, cost-free, and has allowed me to bond with Noah in a way I never expected.”
Did you face any challenges at the start?
“In the beginning, there were some hurdles. Noah struggled to latch on properly, which made me quite anxious. I resorted to pumping for a while and even used a nipple shield for a couple of weeks. However, after a short time, he really took to breastfeeding like a pro!”
Did you ever consider quitting?
“There was a moment early on when I thought about giving up. I felt the pressure of being the sole provider of his nourishment. The first week was overwhelming, especially with a newborn waking up every hour. I heard that formula could help him sleep longer, and there was a time I thought, ‘Maybe breastfeeding isn’t worth it.’ But we persevered, and I’m so glad we did—Noah is thriving at 22 pounds and is such a happy baby. I truly believe breastfeeding has contributed to his well-being.”
Looking back, do you find it easier?
“Absolutely! Breastfeeding is so much more convenient. I can simply pick Noah up from his crib, and everything he needs is right there. No late-night trips to the pharmacy for formula, and it’s always at the right temperature. Plus, it’s all-natural, coming directly from me.”
What are your thoughts on breastfeeding in public?
“I felt a bit shy about it at first, so I used a breastfeeding shawl. I’m comfortable feeding him in front of other women and in public when necessary. After all, we don’t cover our faces when eating a meal, so why should it be different while nursing? It’s a natural part of life.”
What’s been the most rewarding aspect of breastfeeding for you?
“Oh my goodness, the benefits are endless! The connection I have with Noah while nursing is so special. He looks up at me with those big eyes, and it creates such a warm and cozy feeling. I get emotional just thinking about how wonderful it has been from the start. We plan to continue until he’s about one year old, and even though he has started teething, we are still going strong.”
