Acknowledging Our Teens During Quarantine

In times of crisis, we often see both the best and worst in society. Fortunately, the current pandemic has highlighted a surge of support for various essential workers: postal employees, delivery personnel, healthcare professionals, grocery staff, and teachers. Each of these individuals deserves recognition for their dedication during these challenging times.

However, there’s one group that particularly stands out—the teenagers and older tweens. This age group finds itself in a challenging position. They are aware of the ongoing situation, transitioning towards greater independence, and relying heavily on friendships and social interactions for their growth.

When schools closed and lockdown measures were enforced in mid-March, I was genuinely concerned for my teenager and teens everywhere. At a stage when they seek liberation from parental oversight, being confined at home can feel stifling. Yet, over the past few months, I have been continually impressed by their resilience—not just my own child, but many others as well.

While it’s easy to spot complaints regarding teens gathering in parks or riding bikes together, these instances do not represent the majority. In fact, many of the individuals flouting social distancing guidelines appear to be adults. Most teens I know are adhering to the recommended measures. They are educating themselves about COVID-19, staying home, and limiting their outings to essential activities like walks with family. They are reluctantly engaging with online learning platforms such as Schoology, coping with significant losses—graduations, proms, sports seasons, and more—with admirable grace.

Of course, there are days when they may seem moody or overly sarcastic. They might neglect their schoolwork or household chores, and yes, they may leave dirty dishes lying around. However, their ability to maintain friendships, laugh together via video calls, and participate in virtual classes showcases their adaptability. Many are also taking virtual lessons, reaching out to friends who may be struggling, or even making new connections online. Some are engaging in acts of kindness, like delivering groceries to elderly neighbors, displaying heroism in their unique ways.

So here’s to our teens and older tweens. Your efforts during this unprecedented time are commendable. The joy we hear from your laughter during video chats serves as a beacon amid troubling news. Your resilience is inspiring.
