Police departments nationwide have reported a notable increase in calls from victims during lockdown, highlighting a critical need for alternative support. In response, various cities are collaborating with local shelters to offer surplus hotel rooms as temporary accommodations for those in need.
For instance, the Hope Alliance domestic violence shelter in Charlotte, North Carolina, has reached its maximum capacity of 120 occupants. With fears of COVID-19 spreading in confined spaces, they recognized the necessity for a different strategy to assist victims. “We realized that having 120 individuals in one facility posed a significant risk; if one person contracted the virus, it could severely impact us,” stated Hope Alliance’s executive director, Linda Monroe. In response, Mecklenburg County has taken a proactive approach by opening hotel rooms for victims.
Public Health Director Sarah Timmons has integrated Hope Alliance into her annual budget plan, facilitating the relocation of individuals from overcrowded shelters to hotel rooms. Three hotels have been leased, successfully housing over 200 individuals, including 42 survivors from Hope Alliance. Charlotte is just one among hundreds of cities witnessing an alarming rise in domestic violence cases.
“Our funding is dwindling rapidly, but we are committed to keeping our services available,” said Mia Ellis, CEO of YWCA USA, which oversees 76 emergency shelters across the country. YWCA USA has experienced a staggering 70 percent increase in requests for emergency housing. Furthermore, reports from the Texas Safe Haven indicate that the nature of calls has escalated; in just four days, three hotline callers were shot, and two were stabbed.
Organizations like Family Rescue in Laramie, Wyoming, and Stand Strong in Austin, Texas, are also collaborating with local services to provide hotel accommodations or to expand existing shelter operations. The Illinois Department of Human Services is adopting a similar approach, and at least two counties in California have turned to hotel rooms with the help of donations from Rihanna’s charitable foundation.
“This crisis is revealing the weaknesses in our social safety net systems,” remarked Jennifer Clarke, president and CEO of the National Coalition to End Domestic Violence. “The resources available to assist survivors are grossly underfunded and lacking.”
Sheriff Tom Rivera of Hidalgo County acknowledged the anticipated rise in domestic violence cases due to shelter-in-place mandates. “The added stress of children remaining home from school, coupled with financial hardships, has exacerbated the situation for many families,” he explained.
