My Family Will Maintain Our Quarantine Schedule Throughout the Summer

As we approach the final days of remote learning, I find myself relieved but also determined not to abandon our established quarantine schedule. While the idea of a carefree summer where my kids entertain themselves for three months sounds appealing, I know from experience that it simply won’t happen.

Our current routine has proven effective and beneficial for everyone involved. Why would we discard something that works just because school is letting out? After dedicating a month to crafting and teaching my children a balanced daily structure, I’m not about to shake things up simply because the weather is warming and the school year is coming to an end.

Before the schools closed, I meticulously outlined a detailed schedule in a notebook, believing it would give me a sense of control amidst the chaos. However, once e-learning began, I quickly realized that my initial plan was overly ambitious. We adjusted, simplifying our routine without eliminating it entirely. Both kids and parents thrive on the predictability and order that a schedule provides.

With four children, we have essentially two choices: allow our home to devolve into a chaotic mess or establish a routine. There’s no middle ground. I want my kids to be able to check the routine, displayed on our pantry door, and follow it with minimal guidance. I have no interest in running a boot camp for kids, dictating their every move.

After two months of adaptation, our routine is smooth and functional. Each morning begins with breakfast, followed by brushing teeth and getting dressed. They then tackle schoolwork, transitioning from school assignments to skills they need to practice during summer. After a short work period, we take a recess, enjoying outdoor activities like biking and basketball, often with a popsicle treat.

Post-recess, we return inside for chores. Yes, my children have assigned tasks, clearly listed on the pantry door. I refuse to play the role of a maid; chores teach them responsibility and teamwork. If time permits, we squeeze in a bit more schoolwork before lunch.

After we tidy up, it’s time for another recess. Kids who sit too long can become restless and irritable, so we prioritize movement. During summer, our outdoor play includes water activities; when it’s too hot outside, we switch to yoga or dance videos.

By late afternoon, my children are usually showered, in pajamas, and ready to unwind. Screen time is allowed only after they complete their daily responsibilities. Surprisingly, they appreciate this structure. While my husband and I prepare dinner, the kids enjoy their allotted screen time. We then gather for dinner before settling in for a movie and bedtime.

Although I sometimes wish I could be more spontaneous as a mom, especially with kids who have special needs, the reality is that structure offers stability and security for our family. With typical summer activities canceled, we must create our own entertainment. It’s a significant task, but the two months of practice have set us up well for the upcoming summer.

I recognize that even with our routine, there will be sibling squabbles and complaints about snacks. Finding time for my work remains a challenge. Our routine isn’t a magic solution, but it certainly helps maintain order and productivity.

The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have been stressful, yet we strive to make the most of our situation. Embracing our quarantine routine provides us with the stability we need to thrive.
