COVID-19 Has Made Me a Hug Enthusiast

I’ve long been known as someone who shies away from hugs. Anyone who knows me can attest to that. I’ve even been tagged in countless memes poking fun at my anti-hug stance. Friends often try to sneak up on me with hugs, knowing it’s the best way to catch me off guard. To clarify, I don’t actually dislike hugs; if you approach me for one, I’ll usually comply. There are a few major huggers in my life, and I willingly embrace them whenever we meet. It’s not that hugs make me uneasy; it’s just that my brain rarely signals the urge to get physically close to others, even those I hold dear.

Deep emotional connections, however, are something I cherish. I thrive on heartfelt conversations, and I adore cuddling my children to sleep almost every night. If I’m with my partner, touching is practically guaranteed. So yes, I’m affectionate, but hugs just weren’t really my thing—until now.

The pandemic has fundamentally shifted my perspective. I officially declare myself a member of the Hug Enthusiast Club! Once we can safely gather again, prepare yourselves: I have thirty-five years’ worth of hugs ready to give out like confetti. Isolation has altered my outlook, and I’m here for it.

Since I can’t physically embrace anyone at the moment, I’m sending virtual bear hugs to those who deserve them. If I could gather everyone in my arms right now, I would.

Essential Workers

To the doctors, nurses, grocery store staff, military personnel, and cleaning crews—thank you. Your dedication to keeping us safe while we stay home deserves the biggest virtual hug imaginable.

Teachers

To my kids’ teachers, I want to wrap you in gratitude. Managing thirty kids, especially during a pandemic, is no small feat. Your efforts to provide lessons and engage with my children from a distance truly make you the unsung heroes of this challenging time.

Beauty Professionals

Hair stylists and nail technicians, I miss you! My current appearance is a testament to my DIY attempts—let’s just say it’s not pretty. I can’t wait for the day I can thank you in person for the beauty you bring to my life.

Delivery Drivers

To all the delivery drivers out there: you make this pandemic bearable. Your hard work allows us to stay home while still accessing what we need. If I could, I’d run out and give you a heartfelt embrace.

Photographers

Since isolation began, I’ve taken thousands of pictures of my kids, most of which are blurred or feature closed eyes. I’m eager to hire a professional again, and I may just have to hug her out of sheer relief.

Comedians

If you haven’t experienced Leslie Jordan’s daily videos on Instagram, you’re missing out. His humor brings joy to my day. Finding laughter online has been invaluable during this time, reminding me of the importance of connection.

Friends and Family

The absence of my girlfriends and their kids has been tough. I can’t wait to shower them with hugs and love when we reunite. I also miss my parents greatly; it’s maddening not to see them.

This pandemic has taught me the profound importance of human interaction. While digital connections have helped, nothing compares to the joy of face-to-face time with loved ones. When it’s safe to hug again, I’ll be giving out hugs freely. My days as a non-hugger are over. I won’t take the privilege of hugging for granted again.
