In light of the ongoing pandemic, many educational institutions are struggling to find ways to safely celebrate graduation while adhering to social distancing guidelines. One high school in New Hampshire, however, has come up with an innovative solution that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Kennett High School, located in North Conway, will conduct its graduation ceremony atop 2,000-foot Cranmore Mountain on June 13. Graduating seniors will ascend the mountain via chairlift, receive their diplomas at the summit, and then return on the lift as freshly minted graduates. This creative approach not only ensures social distancing but also offers a stunning backdrop for the ceremony.

The idea originated during a lighthearted discussion among school staff about how to manage graduation in the current climate. Principal Lucas Bennett reached out to Ben Wilcox, the president and general manager of Cranmore Mountain Resort and a Kennett alumnus, who quickly saw the potential. “Let me ask the owners,” Wilcox said, and soon after, the plan was approved.

Traditionally, Kennett’s graduation is held on the school’s football field, but this year, each of the 172 seniors will have the option to receive their diploma at the mountain’s peak or at the base. The entire experience, including the chairlift ride, diploma presentation, and photos, will last around 30 minutes, making it an unforgettable alternative to conventional ceremonies.

Moreover, students are working on a personalized soundtrack for the event to enhance the atmosphere further. Following the graduation, there will also be a car parade through Conway, allowing the community to rally behind the Class of 2020.

“This is a fantastic way to celebrate while adhering to safety measures,” remarked marketing director Tara Holloway. “Graduating at the top of a mountain in a ski town is an experience that will be remembered for years to come.”
