If I had realized that Friday in March would be the last time I saw you in class, I would have approached our final moments together with much more intention. Instead of hurriedly gathering materials and preparing for what I mistakenly believed would be a brief transition to distance learning, I would have taken the time to share some important thoughts.
You were stepping into the significant chapter of high school amid a global crisis that has left even the most knowledgeable adults bewildered. When you left that day, you felt a wave of excitement for what you thought was a simple break from routine. However, that sense of normalcy was abruptly stripped away, much like a magician pulling a tablecloth from beneath a set table. While the essentials of your life remained—your family, your home, your school-issued iPad—much of what you knew was suddenly gone.
You won’t experience graduation like those before you, with the celebratory dress, the suit, the cap, and the handshake. You’ve missed out on the chance to explore your new high school environment, participate in spring sports, enjoy gatherings with friends, and savor the end of your 8th-grade journey that, while mundane, was also meaningful. You also face the uncertainty of what the future holds for our world.
Had I known that Friday was our last face-to-face interaction, I would have emphasized the resilience and intelligence that you all possess. Your insights and humor show me that you will be part of the solutions our world needs. I have faith that you will not only navigate this challenging time but will also help shape a brighter future.
If I could turn back time, I would have kept the handouts and notebooks you didn’t require, reminding you of your strengths and capabilities. Most importantly, I would have insisted you seize the opportunity to simply be kids one last time in your familiar world.
