Ellie Knaus is the kind of mom you feel like you’ve known forever, even if you’ve never met. After becoming a mother, Knaus quickly recognized the need for a space to express her parenting struggles. Like many new parents, she turned to podcasts for comfort and connection. However, she never anticipated that her own creation, Atomic Moms, would gain such rapid popularity. Fast forward four years, and the podcast has captured the hearts of mothers everywhere, paving the way for the upcoming ABC sitcom Because Kids, inspired by her experiences and podcast.
In a recent chat, Knaus opened up about her journey through motherhood, podcasting, and balancing it all to maintain her sanity.
How did motherhood lead you to discover podcasts?
Back in 2014, as a new mom, I was searching for a supportive space to explore different parenting approaches and engage in genuine discussions about motherhood. The early months were isolating, and while podcasts filled that void, I struggled to find one that resonated with me. I wanted a podcast that felt like a conversation with an empathetic friend while also providing insights from experts on how to enjoy motherhood and manage my child’s sleep patterns. That’s how Atomic Moms came to life. Now, with over 200 episodes, we delve into the challenges and joys of parenting alongside world-class experts and bestselling authors, capturing the essence of building that essential support network.
What are some joys and complexities of motherhood for you?
The little moments that surprise me bring the greatest joy—like when my 17-month-old, Eliza, hugs my legs or when my 5-year-old, Sabrina, presents me with a drawing she’s poured her heart into. Sure, it might be a picture of her marrying her dad (my husband), but she made me look fabulous with long lashes, so I call that a #MomWin! On the flip side, I sometimes wish I could enjoy these moments without the bittersweet awareness of how fleeting they are. Since my daughter was born, joy and sadness have been inextricably linked for me.
Who’s a dream guest for your podcast?
I would love to have Tara Brach on the show. Her book, Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life with the Heart of the Buddha, has profoundly impacted my life.
Can you tell us about Because Kids?
Absolutely! I’m thrilled to be collaborating with my husband, Adam Sztykiel, to develop a sitcom inspired by my podcast and our family life, in partnership with CBS Studios and ABC. Having moved to LA in 2005 to pursue a career in entertainment, I understand how rare such opportunities are.
