A makeshift memorial for George Floyd has been established near the location of his tragic death while in police custody in Minneapolis on May 29, 2020.
The findings from an independent autopsy regarding George Floyd’s death have now been disclosed. Just a week earlier, 46-year-old Floyd lost his life after former police officer Derek Chauvin applied pressure to his neck for nearly nine minutes. A report from the independent autopsy, requested by Floyd’s family, concluded that his death resulted from asphyxia due to neck and back compression, which led to insufficient blood flow to the brain.
Dr. Samuel Green and Dr. Lisa Harper, who conducted the external examination, highlighted that the pressure applied to Floyd’s body, including handcuffs and his positioning, significantly hindered his diaphragm’s function. They noted that the evidence suggests Floyd passed away at the scene. “Our findings align with what witnesses observed. There were no other health issues that could have contributed to the death,” Green stated. “There’s a misconception among police that if someone can talk, they can breathe. This is simply not accurate.”
Floyd’s family attorney, Richard Allen, emphasized that the “prolonged pressure” was the direct cause of Floyd’s unfortunate demise. “For George Floyd, the ambulance became his hearse. Without a doubt, he would still be alive today if not for the force applied to his neck by former officer Chauvin and the additional pressure from two other officers,” Allen affirmed.
When asked about how long it took Floyd to succumb, Green explained, “From the moment the video started, just moments after Floyd was forced to the ground, it took approximately three minutes and 50 seconds until he became motionless. Bystanders repeatedly warned that he was in distress, yet the pressure continued.” He further elaborated that Floyd was unresponsive for several minutes before emergency medical personnel arrived and found no pulse.
Green also reported that Floyd experienced cardiac arrest, and despite attempts at CPR and defibrillation, he could not be revived. “In my assessment, he was deceased within four to five minutes after the pressure began,” he remarked.
In contrast, a preliminary report from the Minneapolis coroner indicated that Floyd’s death was a result of the “combined effects of being restrained by police, his pre-existing health conditions, and any substances present in his system.” This report also mentioned that Chauvin maintained his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, with Floyd being non-responsive for over two minutes of that duration.

In summary, the independent autopsy of George Floyd revealed that asphyxia due to neck and back compression was the primary cause of death, contradicting earlier findings that suggested other contributing factors. The report highlights the severity of the police restraint and the urgent need for accountability.
