It’s June, and you know what that means: Father’s Day is just around the corner. Prepare yourself for the wide array of emotions this day can evoke. For some, it’s a delightful occasion to express love and gratitude toward the fathers in their lives. For others, particularly those still stinging from an overlooked Mother’s Day, this day might be met with a feeling of resentment. And then there are those grappling with complex relationships with their fathers or in-laws, making this day a source of stress and drama.

Whether you eagerly anticipate this day or dread its arrival, it’s just a couple of weeks away. Are you ready? Do you have a plan, even if that plan is to sneak away with some wine and chocolate?

In discussing Father’s Day with my partner, Jacob, I mentioned that our electricity bill had nearly doubled, requiring me to tighten the budget until payday. He responded that he was perfectly content with a six-pack of beer, a homemade cake, and barbecue chicken for dinner—no gifts necessary. I appreciate his low-maintenance attitude.

Confessions of a Father’s Day Planner

Confessional #1: I managed to snag an incredible Father’s Day gift for my husband. I’m so excited to give it to him that I might not be able to wait until the big day!

Confessional #2: Yesterday, my husband took care of our daughter while I indulged in a much-needed three-hour nap on Father’s Day. He deserves a medal for that one.

Confessional #3: I just purchased a $130 bottle of scotch for my husband for Father’s Day. Living in a household dominated by my daughters and even the dogs, he certainly deserves it!

If Father’s Day brings joy to your household and you’re eager to celebrate your man, we wish you all the happiness, laughter, and charming cards you can muster.

On the other hand, if this day is marred by bitterness due to an ungrateful partner or lingering issues from a disappointing Mother’s Day, may it pass quickly.

Confessional #4: I can’t stand Father’s Day. My husband is a fantastic dad, but he’s not mine. It’s hard not to feel envy when everyone else is celebrating their amazing fathers.

We understand that many still carry the weight of having a disappointing father, making this day especially heavy.

Confessional #5: I’m not looking forward to the guilt trip of having to spend time with my father-in-law. He doesn’t acknowledge us any other day of the year, but magically expects us on Father’s Day.

Many are forced to navigate the tricky waters of in-laws on this occasion, a rule of marriage that seems particularly unfair.

Confessional #6: I just sent the kids outside to play and asked my partner if he wanted to sneak in a quick moment together on Father’s Day. It was spontaneous and thrilling—something we hadn’t done in ages!

Father’s Day can sometimes serve as a reminder of how much you already do, as in, everything.

Confessional #7: I received an email from a restaurant promoting Father’s Day specials. My mind instantly filled in with something cheeky, reflecting a less conventional take on the day.

For some, it may also be a day of reflection on lost loved ones.

Confessional #8: This is the first Father’s Day I won’t be able to visit my late partner’s grave. It’s unsettling and I struggle with the emotions that come with it.

Remember, whether this day is joyous or filled with mixed feelings, it’s just one day. Embrace it as best as you can, and come Monday, remember your worth, regardless of the circumstances.
