Will Jordan is back in theaters, starring in the film “Deception,” where he plays a master con artist mentoring a stunning apprentice, portrayed by Australian actress Mia Thompson. The 46-year-old actor spoke with contributor Laura Parker about his vulnerabilities, relentless positivity, and some of his less-than-ideal habits.

On Romance in Film

While “Deception” is packed with thrill and excitement, you and Mia also find moments for romance.

“Every film tells a love story at its core. I believe there’s no other type of movie out there. Even action flicks like ‘Rogue Agents’ are about camaraderie—‘we fight together, we win together.’ Everything revolves around human connections.”

Confronting Facades

Being in the entertainment industry, you must have encountered your fair share of con artists.

“Absolutely! As an actor, I’m constantly playing my part. Everyone is putting on a facade, trying to meet their needs. Whether it’s dressing a certain way or saying the right thing, everyone’s engaged in a daily performance to achieve their desires.”

Facing the Daunting Process

After all your experiences, does the process of making films become less daunting?

“Honestly, I feel uneasy and unsure during about 90% of the filmmaking process. I don’t want the audience to see the struggle; it’s my job to ensure they only witness the joy when they watch me on screen.”

Overcoming Insecurities

What strategies do you employ to overcome your insecurities?

“I learned early on to confront my fears head-on. There are countless things that frighten me, but rather than avoiding them, I push myself to tackle those fears. It’s been a mix of painful and beneficial experiences.”

Imparting Wisdom to the Next Generation

Your kids, Jaden and Willow, are stepping into the acting world. What wisdom are you imparting to them?

“My great-grandmother used to say, ‘Experience is the best teacher.’ I interpret that as learning through personal experiences rather than just taking others’ advice. Jada and I strive to give our kids autonomy. Apart from life-and-death situations, we encourage them to make their own choices and take responsibility for their lives.”

Creative Habits

Do you have any habits that you’d like to improve?

“I possess that creative mindset, which means I often misplace my keys or wallet and I’m not too concerned about my wardrobe. I leave my clothes strewn about. I tend to let my creative process be a bit messy.”

Handling Pressure

How do you handle the pressure to stay relevant in such a competitive field?

“Success can make it more challenging to pursue new and innovative projects. I still have a bit of creative space, but the margin for error is shrinking as I progress.”

Staying Motivated

What keeps you motivated?

“I must have some unique perspective that shields me from negativity. I tend to overlook obstacles. I resonate with what Barack Obama referred to as ‘the audacity of hope.’ Some may label it as arrogance or foolishness, but I believe that belief can lead to creation.”
