Dear Mr. President,
As a suburban woman, I find myself in the demographic you have been trying hard to win over. However, I must be clear: I cannot and will not support you. Here are ten reasons why:
- I don’t need you to “save” my neighborhood. The real danger comes not from outside but from the racists you have emboldened in my community.
- I don’t require you to protect our heritage. What I fear is living in a nation that refuses to confront its past mistakes instead of glorifying a legacy that should never have been celebrated.
- I’m not looking for you to “bring my husband back to work.” It’s 2020, not the 1950s. What I need is effective management of the pandemic to restore jobs for everyone, especially women who have felt the brunt of job losses due to COVID.
- I don’t need you to rush school reopenings. What I seek is a comprehensive national strategy for COVID mitigation that ensures schools can operate safely.
- I don’t want you to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court just for the sake of gender. I need a justice who will defend reproductive rights and uphold constitutional principles that promote equality and progress.
- I don’t require your mythical healthcare plan to protect pre-existing condition coverage. I want you to maintain the policies that currently provide that protection.
- I don’t need you to be a great orator like your predecessors. I wish for you to stop your misogynistic remarks toward women who stand up to you, as I teach my daughter to expect respect.
- I don’t need you to be a scientist. I simply need you to listen to the experts and follow their guidance.
- I don’t want you to sugarcoat the truth or dismiss real concerns as mere “panic.” I need transparency and honesty from my leaders.
- Lastly, I don’t want to hear you blame others for your failures—be it Obama, Hillary, or anyone else. As women, we know that complaining leads nowhere. It’s time to take responsibility and govern effectively.
With that said, Mr. President, no matter how much you plead, I cannot cast my vote for you. That means there’s at least one thing of mine you won’t be able to take.
Sincerely,
A Suburban Woman Saying No
