The wedding took place at a venue called the North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue, where Suffolk County Executive Mark Thompson reported that 30 of the wedding attendees, including three staff members, contracted the virus. Consequently, 160 others who interacted with these individuals are now required to quarantine.
Despite New York’s restrictions on gatherings of over 50 people, the couple chose to host 91 guests, which has resulted in a significant outbreak. The North Fork Country Club faced a hefty fine of $17,000 for violating regulations. The birthday party, which complied with the legal limit of 50 guests, still saw half of the attendees fall ill, with 26 confirmed COVID cases and 132 people quarantined.
As a result of these two gatherings, six school districts in Suffolk County are now dealing with the fallout from these infections, leading to concerns about potential school closures. Just two weeks prior, another Long Island venue was fined $12,000 for a Sweet Sixteen party that resulted in 37 positive COVID tests among mostly young attendees.
Mark Thompson expressed disappointment in the blatant disregard for public health, emphasizing that such “super spreader” events pose risks to public safety and the economy. He warned that violators will be held accountable.
