I’m in a bit of an unusual situation right now, and I think it’s one many moms can relate to. Most of the friends I have are stay-at-home moms, especially those with little ones. But since I work outside the home, my circle includes a lot of working moms who feel more like colleagues than close friends. Honestly, it often feels like I’m straddling two different worlds.
Whenever I meet another working mom, there’s an instant connection. I think, “Finally, here’s someone who gets it!” But the truth is, not all moms fit neatly into the working vs. stay-at-home categories. It’s much more complex than that. Some moms want to work, while others are perfectly happy at home. There are those who work for financial reasons, like needing a salary or health insurance, and some who stay at home due to personal choice or life circumstances.
The risk of making assumptions about someone based on their job status is two-fold. First, it could lead to missing out on a great friendship just because they have a different arrangement than you do. There’s so much potential for connection between working moms and stay-at-home moms! Working Wendy and Stay-at-Home Sue can totally be friends, even if they both sometimes wish they were in the other’s shoes.
Secondly, life is unpredictable. A mom who’s working today might choose to stay home tomorrow, and vice versa. Having friends who understand both worlds can be incredibly valuable as your circumstances change.
I’ll admit, there’s a flicker of excitement when I meet another working mom, perhaps because I don’t know many. But I need to remember that just being a working mom doesn’t guarantee we’ll click on every level. The same goes for stay-at-home moms; we might hit it off wonderfully! I enjoy having friends from all walks of life; career is just one aspect of who we are.

In summary, finding connections with other moms can be tricky, especially when balancing work and family life. Keeping an open mind about friendships based on shared experiences rather than just employment status can lead to meaningful relationships.
