It’s hard to put it gently: this administration has been a disaster! I recognized this long ago, but after viewing the Hulu documentary Totally Under Control, it’s even clearer how the administration has failed us in multiple ways—from dishonesty to mishandling critical information during the pandemic. The title of the documentary speaks volumes. The phrase “totally under control” became President Trump’s go-to phrase, a misguided attempt to reassure an anxious public. What has unfolded into a global health crisis has had vastly different impacts depending on the leadership in various countries.
The staggering number of over 225,000 American deaths can be attributed to President Donald Trump’s incompetence. He deludes himself into believing that everything is fine and expects us to buy into that narrative. I certainly don’t, and neither should you.
The documentary effectively outlines the missed opportunities that Trump had to rectify his errors. It reveals that when faced with the chance to act responsibly, he consistently chose the wrong path, often shifting the blame onto others, such as the previous administration. This is nothing more than a fabrication.
Every administration has access to a playbook, a guiding document designed to assist incoming leaders in transitioning effectively into office. In May, PBS highlighted the pandemic playbook left by the Obama Administration. This 69-page guide, created in 2016, aimed to help leaders coordinate responses to high-stakes health threats. What more could the Obama Administration have done to prepare Trump’s team? Just two years before the pandemic struck, Trump’s administration slashed funding for critical programs intended to safeguard Americans against such outbreaks.
What can we do when a president and his administration ignore scientific guidance and the wisdom of seasoned leaders? We create a documentary like Totally Under Control, which exposes the lengths to which the administration will go to obscure the truth and maintain a façade of competence.
Trump’s primary focus appears to be preserving his image rather than saving lives. Acknowledging the harsh realities would require him to take tangible action, not just make empty promises about the stock market or insist that everything is just fine. Real leadership involves confronting issues head-on and heeding expert advice, which could have prevented the tragic loss of over 228,000 lives.
While watching the documentary, I couldn’t help but wonder why some people still support this president. What leads them to overlook the chaos he has caused? New York Times reviewer Ben Kenigsberg noted that the documentary gives voice to those who warned about the virus early on, voices that were drowned out by complacency and political maneuvering. This is perhaps the gravest aspect of Trump’s legacy—his silencing of knowledgeable experts in favor of his own misguided beliefs.
It’s hard to imagine how differently things would have unfolded had President Barack Obama been at the helm during this crisis. If Obama had encouraged harmful practices or downplayed the severity of a pandemic, how many would have stood by him? Under Obama’s leadership, the response to the H1N1 virus was swift, resulting in significantly fewer deaths compared to the current situation, where we have witnessed an alarming loss of life due to ineffective leadership.
Totally Under Control showcases the significant gap between Trump’s rhetoric and his actual performance, underscoring the urgent need for competent leadership in times of crisis.
