As Election Day approaches, the “Wall of Deception” mural in Manhattan has returned, now more expansive than ever. Initially vandalized with pro-Trump and white supremacist messages, this public art piece has been recreated and relocated to SoHo, now measuring an impressive 100 feet in length, double its original size.
Originally displayed outside an independent station in Brooklyn, the mural showcases over 20,000 misleading statements made by former President Donald Trump since 2016, meticulously documented and fact-checked by a reliable news source. Since its launch on October 3, the mural has attracted large crowds, including a visit from local Senator Mark Rivers just a day after its debut.
However, it wasn’t long before the wall was defaced with slogans like “Vote Trump or else” and “Stand Back and Stand By,” the latter becoming a rallying cry for certain extremist groups. After only a few days on display, it was tagged with graffiti.
Following a successful GoFundMe campaign, the creators raised over $4,000, allowing them to rebuild the “Wall of Deception” in lower Manhattan. “While it’s disheartening to see our work vandalized, fighting for the truth has always come with its challenges. The impressions this wall leaves cannot be erased,” said the Executive Director of the station on their fundraising page. “Vandalism won’t silence our message.”
In addition to constructing a new mural, the team also launched a digital version on their website where visitors can explore the wall interactively. This online experience allows users to zoom in and focus on specific lies, organized chronologically and by topic, such as health, immigration, and the environment.
Artist Jamie Larkin, who contributed to the project, noted, “From afar, it appears chaotic—perhaps a fitting reflection of this administration. But when you get closer, the individual lies become clear, allowing viewers to notice patterns in the misinformation.”
Initially, the team planned a 24/7 broadcast reading all of Trump’s statements leading up to the election, but due to the pandemic, they shifted to this impactful visual representation. “In an era rife with misinformation, we believe it’s crucial to highlight these falsehoods in a compelling manner,” Larkin explained.
