In a significant legal setback, actor Johnny Depp has lost his libel case against the British tabloid The Sun, which labeled him a “wife beater” during his tumultuous marriage to ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp initiated the lawsuit in 2018, asserting that he was entitled to significant damages due to the damage to his reputation.
British judge Andrew Nicol stated there was “overwhelming evidence” of Depp’s repeated assaults on Heard throughout their relationship. In dismissing the case, he noted that the evidence presented by the defendants supported the claim, including incidents where Depp allegedly hit Heard and pulled her hair. Judge Nicol remarked, “I accept that Mr. Depp put her in fear of her life.”
Depp’s legal action targeted News Group Newspapers, the publisher of The Sun, and its executive editor, Dan Wootton, who authored a 2018 article detailing instances of Depp’s alleged violence on at least 14 occasions. During a three-week hearing at London’s High Court in July, both parties recounted troubling incidents of abuse. Depp claimed that Heard had physically assaulted him, even stating he lost part of his finger due to a vodka bottle she threw.
In contrast, Depp’s former partner Vanessa Paradis and actress Winona Ryder provided witness statements affirming that he had never been violent toward them. Following the ruling, women’s rights advocates expressed satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of the decision in supporting survivors of domestic abuse. Lisa King, a spokesperson for Refuge, a charity for domestic violence victims, stated, “This is an important ruling and one which we hope sends a very powerful message: Every single survivor of domestic abuse should be listened to and should be heard.”
In his written judgment, Judge Nicol concluded that most of the alleged assaults by Depp against Heard were proven to the civil standard. Depp’s lawyer, Jenny Afia, criticized the judgment as flawed, arguing it would be unreasonable for Depp not to appeal.
Additionally, Depp is pursuing a defamation case against Heard in the U.S. over an opinion piece she wrote for The Washington Post, which he claims led to his dismissal from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Heard’s attorney, Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, indicated that they would soon present further evidence in the U.S. court, asserting their commitment to seeking justice for Heard.
In her testimony, Heard described repeated threats to her life from Depp and detailed various forms of physical abuse, including punching, slapping, and choking.
