Today marks six months since I first contracted COVID-19, and the aftermath has been overwhelming. I’ve hesitated to share my experience publicly until now, but I feel it’s important to speak out in the hopes that my story serves as a cautionary tale for others.
My Health Decline
Over the past six months, my health has dramatically declined:
- I was hospitalized due to severe chest pain, requiring IV pain relief and fluids for a high fever.
- I’ve endured pneumonia twice, along with lung damage known as lung fibrosis.
- I’ve experienced pleurisy and inflammation in my rib cage cartilage.
- Persistent brain fog has plagued me; I’ve struggled to think clearly and often have to repeat tasks.
- My liver is inflamed, preventing me from consuming alcohol.
- Daily, I face chest pain and shortness of breath.
- My exercise routine is now limited to walking; anything more leaves me gasping for air. Before March 16, I was a regular at spin classes three times a week.
To add to my concerns, my resting heart rate has risen from 55 to 101. I just returned from a cardiologist appointment, during which I learned I need two echocardiograms and an MRI to assess potential heart damage.
The Seriousness of COVID-19
COVID-19 is a serious threat. It can trigger an inflammatory response that doesn’t necessarily land you in a hospital but can be life-altering. My case was classified as “mild to moderate,” yet the effects have been profound. My cardiologist is cautiously optimistic, though he admits he’s unsure how to treat my lingering symptoms. He mentioned that I’m not alone; several of his patients in September presented with similar long-term effects. The average “long hauler,” as we are termed, is 44 years old, often a woman, and typically fit and healthy prior to infection — just like me.
Despite these challenges, I continue to manage daily responsibilities like baking bread and taking care of the kids; lying in bed indefinitely isn’t an option. My doctor assures me that I have a robust number of antibodies (I hope they remain) and that I’m no longer contagious. I must adapt to this new reality.
I’m sharing my story not to seek sympathy but to remind everyone that fatigue over COVID-19 doesn’t lessen its seriousness. I understand the exhaustion of hearing about it, but it’s crucial to keep taking this virus seriously.
